Women's Basketball Falls To UNC-Charlotte, 65-54

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Senior guard Tonia Thomas (Seguin, Texas) tallied a team-high 16 points in the University of Massachusetts 65-54 loss to UNC-Charlotte on Nov. 21 in Charlotte, N.C. The Minutewomen fall to 0-2 this season, while the Lady 49ers improve to 1-1 in regular-season play.
Two other UMass players scored in double-figures in the game with senior Alison MacFarland (Brick, N.J.) registering 11 points and freshman Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) collecting 10 points. MacFarland also pulled down a team-high eight boards.
Tonya Phifer led UNC-Charlotte with 20 points, while Jameka Jones added 11 points.
The Lady 49ers stormed out with a 12-0 run to grab the early advantage in the game, but the Minutewomen managed to slim the lead down with a 12-2 rally of their own to pull to within two of UNC-Charlotte at 14-12. The Lady 49ers were able to hold on to the first-half advantage, though, heading into halftime with a 32-24 lead over UMass.
UNC-Charlotte again came out of the locker room ready to battle with a 6-0 spurt to hold a 16-point lead over the Minutewomen. UMass could only cut the Lady 49er advantage to as low as nine points for the remainder of the game, and UNC-Charlotte held on to victory with the 65-54 decision to capture its first win of the regular season.
The Minutewomen managed to outrebound the Lady 49ers, 41-37, but were held to 31.7 percent shooting from the field for the game.
UMass will next travel back to Massachusetts to take on intra-state foe Holy Cross on Nov. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
