University of Massachusetts head rowing coach Eric Carcich announced the addition of assistant coach Steph Chivers to the program in Fall 2019. Chivers arrived at UMass after spending the previous four years at Cornell, including the 2018-19 season under Carcich. Chivers was then promoted to Associate Head Coach prior to the 2023 spring season.
Â
The Big Red had two rowers named All-Ivy League each of her final two seasons. The Third Varsity Eight narrowly missed the medals at the 2017 Ivy League Championships and Chivers helped the squad take bronze in the Varsity Four at the 2016 event.
Â
With Chivers on Carcich’s staff at George Washington (2010-15), GW made incredible strides toward the top of the Atlantic 10 standings after a long track record of finishing in the bottom half. In three of Chivers’ final four seasons with the Colonials, the program tabbed fourth or higher at the Atlantic 10 Championships. She played an instrumental role in the development of novice rowers.
Â
She coached the novice boats at Division II Nova Southeastern from 2008-10, including leading the Varsity Four to the 2009 NCAA Championship. Chivers made her first foray into the coaching world as a graduate assistant at Ithaca in 2007-08.
Â
Chivers was a standout rower at UConn and captained the team as a senior. She was a CRCA Scholar-Athlete in 2004 and received the program’s Husky Award for Friendship, Leadership and Dedication.
Â
Chivers graduated from UConn in 2007 with a Bachelor’s Degree in sports coaching and administration, before adding a Master’s Degree in sport psychology from Ithaca the following year. She is a native of Dalton, Massachusetts.
