His role evolved during his 15-year tenure, during which time he also had varying responsibilities for coaching athletes in the multi-events, throws, long sprints, middle distances and cross country. He ascended through the programs, ultimately to become head coach of women's cross country and track and field teams.

During his time at Amherst, athletes that Adamson coached set and reset school records in 17 different events on the track and in the jumps, throws and multi-events. Coach Adamson's athletes won conference, New England, ECAC and National Championships. Additionally 25 athletes qualified to compete at the NCAA Championships, earning 23 All-American Awards. His student-athletes earned 128 All-New England Awards and 70 All-ECAC Awards, as well.

At Amherst, Adamson was a four-time finalist for the United States Track and Cross Country Coaches' Association's Track and Field Coach of the Year recognition, winning the peer-voted award in 2011.
