Takashi Gould joined the UMass cross country/track & field staff as a volunteer assistant coach in 2020 after spending the previous 11 years as a high school cross country and track & field coach in the state of Michigan.
Throughout his career, Gould’s team have experienced success on multiple fronts including roster and retention rate, in the classroom, and in competition. During the past 11 years, Gould’s teams grew in roster size each season and had a near perfect retention rate, and cultivated talent that translated into success in the classroom and in competition. As a head coach, Gould had 16 athletes earn 31 All-State honors. Nine of those athletes also earned 15 Academic All-State honors in addition to 8 New Balance National Qualifiers and two Individual State Champions.
Gould was also heavily involved with M.I.T.C.A. (Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association), where he served as a member of the Academic All-State Committee for three years. He also served as head coach for Team Michigan in the MidEast Meet of Champions for five years, culminating in four victories by the boys team and two by the girls team, bringing Michigan the overall trophy three times. The four consecutive wins by the Michigan Boys Team (2016-19) is the longest streak by any state and gender in the history of the meet.
Gould is also a huge advocate and promoter of coaching education, and hold several certifications from USTFCCCA, ALTIS, among other groups. He is also a co-creator of an annual one-day cross country coaches clinic. The “Problems/Solutions XC Clinic” attracts more than 50 high school and middle school coaches each year to share, discus, and problem solve common issues for interscholastic coaches at the grassroots level.
Prior to coaching he was a recruited student-athlete (cross country and track & field) at Eastern Michigan University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language & Culture in 2011.
