Massachusetts Baseball Shuts Out Ohio, 1-0

Three Minutemen combined for the three-hit shutout, with Sam Perry allowing no hits through 6.1 innings.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball defeated Ohio, 1-0, to win its fourth straight Mid-American Conference series, on Sunday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Freshman Sam Perry allowed no hits through 6.1 innings, as Perry, graduate student Brandon Wingenroth and senior Jack Niedringhaus all combined for the three hit shutout.
UMass improved to 16-24 overall, and 12-15 in the MAC, while Ohio moved to 9-38 overall and 6-21 in the league.
Ryan Kolben went 2-for-3 on the day, followed by Gavin O'Brien and Vance Bonior with one hit each. Anthony Tirado scored the Minutemen's lone run, as Ty Fox had an RBI.
Massachusetts got on the board early in the first to lead, 1-0. Tirado led off with a walk, before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error. Fox hit a ground ball that allowed Tirado to score from third.
The Minutemen stymied the Ohio offense, not allowing a hit until the seventh. UMass continued to hold off the Bobcats from scoring as one run was only needed for Massachusetts to earn the victory.
Perry (2-0) received the winning decision, tossing 6.1 innings, allowing no runs, one hit, three walks and dealing a career-high seven strikeouts. Niedringhaus earned his fifth save of the season after giving up one hit, no runs, a walk and striking out one in one inning.
Additionally, Wingenroth pitched for 1.2 innings and allowed only one hit with no runs, walked one and struck out one.
Evan Lichtenauer (1-4) took the loss for Ohio, giving up one run on four hits, walking one and striking out one in seven innings of work.
Massachusetts welcomes UMass Lowell on Wednesday, May 6, for a 3 p.m. game at Earl Lorden Field.
