Baseball Drops Close, 4-3, Midweek Contest At UAlbany

Gobeil records first two career doubles and homer in first collegiate start.
ALBANY, N.Y. - University of Massachusetts baseball fell to UAlbany in a close 4-3 contest on Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field.
Despite the loss, freshman Dean Gobeil posted two doubles, marking the first of his career, and first collegiate home run during his first collegiate start.
UMass moved to 5-11 overall on the season, while UAlbany improved to 4-14 on the year.
Dean Gobeil led the Minutemen on the day, going 3-for-4, with his first two career doubles and first collegiate home run. He added a run and RBI on the afternoon. Reece McCarthy followed with two hits which included a double and scored a run. Ty Fox, Braden Sullivan and Marc Willi all had one hit. Fox and Kolben also tallied an RBI, as Sam Hill scored a run.
After a scoreless opening frame, Massachusetts took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. McCarthy led off the inning with a double to left center field, before stealing third. A ground out to short stop allowed McCarthy to touch home plate.
UAlbany grabbed a 4-1 lead in the bottom half of the second with a grand slam.
In the third, Hill walked, and advanced to second on a ground out to the short stop. Fox then singled to right field to drive Hill home and cut the Minutemen's deficit in half, 4-2.
Through five scoreless innings, Massachusetts came back within one in the top of the ninth, as Gobeil registered his first career home run.
The Great Danes were able to record the final out, though, and hang on for a 4-3 win.
Jack Levine (1-2) had the loss for UMass after pitching three complete innings with four runs on as many hits, no walks and a career-best six strikeouts.
Brian Cadieux (1-2) earned the win for UAlbany, giving up no runs, four hits, three walks and striking out four in four innings of work. Jameson Walsh received the save, tossing one inning with a run, two hits, no walks and no strikeouts.
Massachusetts prepares for a three-game weekend series against Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Friday, March 27, through Sunday. March 29. First pitch on Friday is slated for 3:05 p.m., before a 1:05 p.m. start on both Saturday and Sunday.
