#19 Massachusetts Hockey’s Win Streak Snapped With 3-1 Loss At UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – No. 19 University of Massachusetts hockey pulled level with UMass Lowell after going down, 1-0, but the River Hawks' late second period goal would prove to be the difference in Friday's 3-1 setback for the Minutemen at the Tsongas Center. The loss leaves UMass at 16-11-0 overall 9-8-0 in Hockey East, while UMass Lowell improves to 10-17-0, 6-11-0 in league action.
After a scoreless first, Dillan Bentley put the River Hawks on the board 7:56 into the second. Collecting a pass from Luke Shilpley and Mirko Buttazzoni, Bentley walked in from the point and fired a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle over goaltender Michael Hrabal's shoulder and into the top right corner of the net.
The Minutemen responded with the equalizer at the 11:27 mark. Junior Cam O'Neill carried the puck deep into the UMass Lowell zone and hit a streaking Justin Kerr with a centering feed that he finished from the slot. Sophomore Daniel Jencko earned the secondary helper.
However, the River Hawks pulled back in front before the intermission. TJ Schweighardt's stretch pass allowed Lee Parks to get in behind the UMass defense to go in alone on Hrabal for the score at 17:12.
UMass Lowell added insurance with an empty net goal 17:53 into the third with Libor Nemec and Connor Eddy setting up Jak Vaarwerk for the tally.
The River Hawks out-shot the Minutemen, 33-22 and both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play.
Hrabal turned aside 30 shots for UMass and Austin Elliott made 21 saves for UMass Lowell.
The teams will close out their three-game set tomorrow night, February 7, at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
