Baseball Falls To Siena, 9-7

UMass moved to 4-1 overall on the season, with Siena improving to 1-7 on the year.
Anthony Tirado went 3-for-4 on the day with a run to lead the team. Six Minutemen had one hit on the day, including a double from Gavin O'Brien and a triple from Ryan Kolben, marking the first of his career. Seven different players contributed a run for UMass. Kolben led with three RBI, followed by O'Brien with two.
Siena put up three runs in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. The Saints scored on a wild pitch and two-run double to center field in the frame.
Massachusetts cut the deficit to two, making it a 3-1 game in the third. Braden Sullivan started off the inning with a walk, before stealing second. With one out, Sullivan advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Vance Bonior hit a grounder up the left side, as Sullivan crossed the plate.
The Minutemen made it a one run game as O'Brien headed home on a bases loaded walk to make it a 3-2 game in the fourth. With two outs, Kolben registered his first career triple to drive in Reece McCarthy, Jack Beverly and Ty Fox to take a 5-3 lead.
The Saints tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth to reclaim the lead at 6-5.
UMass took back the lead at 7-6 in the seventh frame. After two outs, Matt Travisano took his base after being hit by a pitch, before O'Brien singled to left center field. McCarthy doubled down the left field line, driving home Travisano and O'Brien.
Siena tied up the game at seven apiece, before adding two more runs in the top of the eighth to lead 9-7.
The Minutemen had a man on third, but were unable to score, as Siena held on to a 9-7 win.
Adam Merritt (0-1) had the loss for Massachusetts after tossing one inning and giving up three runs on four hits, a walk and striking out three.
Ryan Lundari (1-0) received the win for Siena, allowing two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out three in four complete innings of work. Matt Murtagh earned the save with no runs, one hit, one walk and two strikeouts in his one inning outing.
The series finale between UMass and Siena is set for Sunday, March 1, at 12 p.m. in Aberdeen, Maryland, at Ripken Stadium.
