CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ā No. 20/19 University of Massachusetts hockey battled back from a first period deficit to tie the score at 1-1, but Harvard managed to respond at the end of a lengthy penalty kill and skated past UMass, 2-1 on Thursday night at Bright-Landry Hockey Center. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 3-4-1 on the year, while the Crimson improve to 1-0-0.
"We've played eight games and they've all been pretty similar," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Slow start, play in spurts, find ways to kind of shoot ourselves in the foot. Harvard played well. We can't put 60 minutes together right now. We maybe put half a game together. It's lots of things that that don't look like UMass Hockey."
Harvard opened the scoring 4:45 into the opening period as Heikki Ruohenen caused a turnover in the UMass end and sent a bouncing puck past Ethan Eskit from the right faceoff circle.
The Minutemen leveled the score midway through the second period. After collecting the puck from freshman Samu Alalauri, sophomore Václav Nestrašil fired a shot from the perimeter that senior captain Jack Musa redirected home from the slot at the 7:03 mark.
After back-to-back UMass power plays, the Crimson climbed back on top before the second intermission. With the second of two consecutive Harvard penalties expiring, Richard Gallant hit Matthew Morden in stride with an outlet pass as he exited the penalty box. Morden carried the puck into the offensive zone and tucked a wrister inside the far post at the 17:55 mark.
UMass made a strong push for the equalizer with the net empty for the final 1:40 of the third period, but Harvard held on for the win and finished with a 34-21 shot advantage. The Minutemen were 0-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow night, Oct. 30, at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m. Ā
