Massachusetts Hockey Outlasts Northeastern In OT To Push Win Streak To Six

January 30, 2026 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Justin Kerr scored with just 21 seconds left in overtime to extend Massachusetts hockey's winning streak to six with a 3-2 victory over Northeastern on Friday at the Mullins Center. With the win, the Minutemen move to 15-10-0, 8-7-0 in Hockey East, while the Huskies fall to 12-12-0 and 7-9-0 in league action.

"When you're when you're winning, you find ways to win," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I'm not so sure we deserved to win tonight. I thought we were very good in the first period. Then, for whatever reason in the second period, we came out and Northeastern took the game over, and I felt like they took it over for the last two periods. Michael Hrabal, I know he broke a record tonight for longest streak of shutout minutes, and he's been outstanding. And luckily, Larry Keenan was outstanding tonight too. He played a huge factor in the game on both sides of the puck. I wasn't crazy about our game in the second and third period. Again, not so sure we deserved the win tonight, but we'll take it and move it to six games unbeaten."

The teams battled through an even scoreless first period. Then, midway through the second, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead, ending Hrabal's shutout streak at a program record 191 minutes and 14 seconds. Dylan Hryckowian and Amine Hajibi won a puck battle below the goal line and fed Austin May in the slot for the finish at 9:49.

UMass was quick to equalize with a highlight reel individual effort from Keenan. Holding the puck at the blueline, Keenan deked his way around the Northeastern defense and backhanded home his fifth of the season at the 13:11 mark.

Junior Jack Musa then put the Minutemen on top just before the intermission. Freshman Jack Galanek advanced the puck ahead to classmate Václav Nestrašil out of the UMass end and Nestrašil carried it over the Huskies blueline before setting up Musa with a drop pass that he finished off for his 10th of the season at 18:48.

Northeastern leveled the score at the 4:39 mark of the third. When Hryckowian buried a one-timer from Vinny Borgesi and Hajibi from the left faceoff circle.

With the threat of a shootout looming, Kerr potted the game winner from the high slot in the extra frame. Keenan and Galanek collected the assists.

The Huskies ended the night with a 44-27 shot advantage and both teams were 0-for-1 on the power play. Hrabal totaled 42 saves for UMass and Lawton Zacher stopped 24 for Northeastern.

The Minutemen will next travel to UMass Lowell for a Sunday afternoon tilt on February 1 at 3:30 p.m. on NESN.
