AMHERST, MASS. -  The Minutemen head to Kalamazoo, Michigan, to take on Western Michigan for the first time in program history on Tuesday, January 13, at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with live updates and links available at umassathletics.com or @UMassMBB on X (Twitter).

This week for the Minutemen
The Matchup
  • Massachusetts and Western Michigan will be meeting for the first time on Tuesday night.
  •  It will mark the third first time opponent of the season thus far for the Minutemen, following the Le Moyne and Bowling Green matchups.
Last Time out
  • Massachusetts earned a 79-71 win over Ball State on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center, marking the first MAC victory for UMass (1-4 MAC). 
  • Graduate student Leonardo Bettiol went 7-for-9 from the field and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe to put up a team-leading 20 points. 
  • Bettiol added eight rebounds, three assists and a steal on the day. 
  • Marcus Banks Jr. posted 17 points, including 16 in the second half, and K'Jei Parker followed with 14. 
  • Daniel Hankins-Sanford recorded his sixth double-double of the year, scoring 10 points and coming down with a game-high 10 boards.
  • Danny Carbuccia led in assists with six.

  • Western Michigan is coming off a 79-62 win over Eastern Michigan heading into Tuesday's contest. 
  • Broncos Head Coach Dwayne Stephens is in his fourth season at Western Michigan, accumulating a 39-72 (23-35 MAC) overall record during his time in Kalamazoo. 
  • Jalen Griffith averages 15.5 points per game to lead Western Michigan in scoring, while ranking 10th in the league. 
  • Jayden Brewer holds a team-leading 122 rebounds (7.6 per game), and ranks fifth in the MAC. 
  • The Broncos are 7-9 overall and 1-3 in the MAC. 
Year Four Under Coach Martin
  • Massachusetts basketball enters its fourth season under head coach Frank Martin in 2025-26.
  • Martin and the Minutemen finished the 2024-25 season with 12 wins, including seven in conference play. Under Martin's tutelage guard Rahsool Diggins had a breakout senior season, averaging a team-high 16.8 points on his way to earning All-Atlantic 10 Third Team honors.
  • In 2023-24 Martin led the Minutemen to their best season since 2014, finishing with a 20-11 overall record and securing a top-four seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship.
  • Coach Martin started his time in Amherst by leading the Minutemen to their best record under a first-year head coach since 1996 and the Myrtle Beach Invitational title during the 2022-23 campaign.
  • Martin holds a 344-255 (.575) collegiate coaching mark, picking up 171 of his wins in 10 seasons at South Carolina while recording 117 wins in five seasons at Kansas State.
  • Head coach Frank Martin picked up his 300th collegiate coaching win on Jan. 25, 2023 with a 85-76 win over Richmond.
TIP-OFF TIDBITS
  • UMass has held opponents to a 28.1 shooting percentage from three, ranking first in the conference and 11th in the country. 
  • UMass +7.1 rebounding margin ranks first in the MAC and 41st in the NCAA. 
  • Massachusetts ranks first in the MAC in rebounds per game (38.76) and second in offensive rebounds per game (12.35). 
  • The Minutemen rank second in the MAC and 26th nationally by averaging 18.2 assists per game. 
  • UMass features four players averaging double figures in points including Leonardo Bettiol (16.3), Marcus Banks Jr. (15.8), Daniel Hankins-Sanford (12.5) and K'Jei Parker (11.4).
  • Bettiol and Banks Jr., rank eighth and ninth, respectively, in points per game in the MAC.
  • Bettiol is also shooting 61.2 percent from the field to rank first in the league (23rd nationally).
  • Bettiol is also averaging 7.4 rebounds per game to rank sixth in the MAC, while Hankins-Sanford ranks seventh (7.1). 
  • Among MAC players, Banks Jr. ranks first in three-point attempts (136) and three pointers made (51), while ranking second in three pointers per game (3.00) and fourth in three-point percentage (37.5). 
  • Danny Carbuccia's 5.8 assists per game rank second in the MAC and 32nd in the country, while his 3.16 assist/turnover ratio is second in the league and 36th in the country. 
  • Carbuccia's 3.16 mark ranks second in the country among freshmen, trailing only Ethan Elliott of Northern Kentucky (3.42).
  • Hankins-Sanford (6) and Bettiol (3) each have multiple double-doubles this season.
  • Hankins-Sanford's six double-doubles are the second most in the MAC.
