Massachusetts Baseball Takes Game One From Navy, 8-5

Jack Peters recorded a career-high three hits on the day.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball topped Navy, 8-5, on Friday evening at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.

UMass improved to 4-3-1 on the year, while Navy fell to 3-8 overall.

Jack Peters led the way with a career-best three hits, including his second double of the season, while scoring two run to match a career-high. Peters added an RBI on the day. Matt Travisano followed with two hits which included a double of his own, with Jack Beverly and Carter Hanson with one hit apiece. Beverly contributed two runs and two RBI. Four Minutemen earned a run, with Hanson adding an RBI.

The Minutemen got on the board first, as Beverly and Hanson crossed home plate in the top of the first. The Midshipmen put up a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double, before adding a run in the second frame to make it a 2-2 game.

Navy took a 4-2 lead in the third with a two-run double. The Midshipmen tacked on another run in the inning to take extend their lead to 5-2.

UMass reclaimed the lead in the fifth, as Travisano led off with a double to left center field, before advancing to third on a fly out. Peters singled up the middle, bringing home Travisano to get back within two. After Anthony Tirado was walked, he stole second with Beverly at the plate. Beverly hit a two-run single to knot the game up at five apiece. The Minutemen took the lead, 6-5, with a two-out, RBI double from Hanson to score Beverly.

Massachusetts tacked on two more runs in the sixth frame. After Michael Toth was walked, Peter doubled to left center field. A wild pitch with two outs helped Toth cross the dish and Peters advance to third. Another wild pitch allowed Peters to touch home plate and make it an 8-5 contest.

The Minutemen held off the Midshipmen in the final three innings to come away with the 8-5 victory.

Robbie O'Connor went six complete innings with five runs on eight hits, a walk and two strikeouts to receive the winning decision for UMass. Andrew Middleton pitched three innings, allowing no runs, no hits, walking four and dealing nine strikeouts on the day to earn his first save of the season, and fourth of his career.

Brady Bendik took the loss for Navy, going 4.2 innings with six runs on three hits, three walks and striking out four.
