Baseball’s Contest At Quinnipiac Ends In 7-7 Draw

Due to darkness, the game came to an end heading to the 10th inning.
HAMDEN, Conn. – Tuesday afternoon's game between the University of Massachusetts baseball team and Quinnipiac University finished in a 7-7 tie, after play was halted heading to the 10th inning due to darkness at Quinnipiac Baseball Field.
Carter Hanson totaled a team-leading two hits, including his second home run of the year, while adding a run and an RBI. Anthony Tirado, Braden Sullivan, Jack Beverly and Zack Zaetta all had one hit apiece, with Beverly recording his first homer of the season and Tirado registering his first collegiate double. In addition to Hanson, six other Minutemen tallied a run on the day. Tirado and Beverly had two RBI each, followed by Sullivan and Zaetta with one.
Massachusetts took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame, as Tirado led off with double to right center field. With one out, Tirado advanced to third on an error by the pitcher, before a two-run home run by Beverly, marking his first of the season, put the Minutemen ahead early.
Quinnipiac took back a run in the bottom half of the first, off an RBI double to make it a 2-1 contest.
After two scoreless innings, Hanson led off with a solo long ball over the right field wall to pull ahead, 3-1, in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Zaetta was walked as Jared Muñoz crossed the plate to make room. A two RBI fielder's choice led to UMass adding two more runs with Matt Travisano touching the dish, before Michael Toth scored on a throwing error by the shortstop, making it a 6-1 lead. The Bobcats pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fourth to get back within two at 6-4.
UMass tacked on another run as Zaetta slid into home on a single through the left side from Sullivan to pull the Minutemen ahead, 7-4 in the sixth. Quinnipiac put up three runs in the eighth to knot the game up at 7-7.
The Minutemen and Bobcats remained tied through the ninth, but the game was called due to darkness, as the two teams were heading to extras.
Drew Sliwkowski made his first start on the mound for the Minutemen, pitching two complete innings with one run on two hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Ben Thomason made his debut on the hill, going 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on as many hits, two walks and striking out one. Austin Campbell also made his debut with the Maroon and White, tossing 1.2 innings with three runs on three hits, a walk and three strikeouts dealt.
