Massachusetts Baseball Drops Season Opener, 4-1

The Minutemen and Wildcats face off for game two on Saturday at 6 p.m.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped a 4-1 decision in the season opener against Bethune-Cookman on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Four Minutemen had one hit apiece, including Mitchell Schroeder who added the lone run for UMass. Sam Hill tallied an RBI, while three players were walked once.
Bethune-Cookman took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Minutemen knotted up the game soon after in the top of the second, Schroeder led off with a single to right field, followed by Marc Willi's single to left field. Schroeder tagged up and advanced to third on Ryan Kolben's fly out to center field, before Hill hit a sacrifice fly, which allowed Schroeder to cross the plate.
The Minutemen and Wildcats maintained its 1-1 tie through five innings, which included a double play in the bottom of the fourth. With a man on base, Robbie O'Connor struck out the batter with a 3-2 count, as Kolben threw down to second to catch the runner stealing to empty the bases.
In the bottom of the seventh, Bethune-Cookman broke the tie with a run scored on a wild pitch. A two-run double for the Wildcats added two more runs to take a 4-1 lead. UMass was unable to get the bats going in the final innings, as the Wildcats held on for a 4-1 win.
O'Connor earned the start on the mound, pitching six complete innings and allowing one run on four hits, no walks, and matched a career-high five strikeouts. Jack Levine entered for two innings, taking the loss, with four hits, three runs, three walks and striking out a career-best five.
Tanner Boccabello earned the win for Bethune-Cookman, allowing only one run on three hits, with two walks and four strikeouts in seven innings. Jean Carlos Zambrano recorded the save with one hit, one walk and three strikeouts in two innings pitched.
