DeAngelo Lifts #17/18 Massachusetts Hockey Past #16 Providence In OT, 2-1

November 20, 2025 | Hockey

PROVIDENCE – Two goals from sophomore Mikey DeAngelo and a 48-save performance from junior Jackson Irving helped lift #17/18 Massachusetts hockey past #16 Providence, 2-1 in overtime at Schneider Arena on Thursday night. With the win, the Minutemen improve to 8-6-0 overall and 2-4-0 in Hockey East, while the Friars fall to 5-5-2 and 3-3-1 in league action.

"It looked like a UMass hockey team out there," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "You know, some nights this year it hasn't looked that way. Tonight, we did. It was a hard-fought game, they always are here. I'm very proud of the guys. They followed the game plan well, and they competed for 60 minutes and earned a win in tough place to play."

The teams were scoreless through 20 minutes with UMass' best chance of the opening period coming with just over seven minutes to play as DeAngelo was denied by goaltender Philip Svedebäck on a partial breakaway.

Late in the second period, DeAngelo ultimately broke up the deadlock. Freshman Justin Kerr collected the puck behind the net and sent a pass up the wall to senior Lucas Ölvestad. Ölvestad's shot from the top of the left faceoff circle was turned aside, but DeAngelo found the rebound for a stuff in at the back post at the 15:15 mark.

With the third period winding down, Providence leveled the score at 1-1. Julius Sumpf and Will Egler won a battle in the corner to free the puck for Roger McQueen for a one-timer from the slot 17:13 into the stanza.

UMass responded by outshooting the Friars in the extra period, 3-0, and winning 5-of-6 faceoffs in OT. After receiving the puck from freshman Václav Nestrašil and sophomore Francesco Dell'Elce, DeAngelo dangled his way through the Providence defense and tucked a backhander in behind Svedebäck at 4:15.

The Friars finished with a 49-30 shot advantage, while the Minutemen went 1-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. UMass won 40-of-62 (55.6%) of the faceoffs in the contest, led by a 19-for-35 (54.3%) night for freshman Jack Galanek.

Irving's 48 stops matched his career high, while Svedebäck turned aside 28 for Providence.

The teams will be back in action on Saturday, November 22, for the second game of the series at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
