Trio Tabbed UMass Student-Athletes Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's basketball graduate student Leonardo Bettiol, women's basketball sophomore Yahmani McKayle and hockey junior Jackson Irving have all been selected as the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday. The trio will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday in the Berkshire Room of the Berkshire Dining Commons.
Bettiol had a stellar opening weekend for the Minutemen, averaging 19.0 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 76.5 percent from the field. The Roncade, Italy native led Massachusetts with 23 points and eight rebounds in the team's 83-62 win over UAlbany to cap the first week of the regular season last Saturday.
McKayle helped women's basketball open the season with a pair of wins, including at Old Dominion (Nov. 3) and against Siena (Nov. 8). In the two games, she averaged 16.5 points per game, four rebounds per game, six assists per game and two-and-half steals per game.
After a 14-point, five rebound and four assist effort in the win at Old Dominion, the sophomore point guard poured in 19 points and added eight assists and five steals in the home-opening win over Siena. The five steals tied her career high. She played 39 minutes against ODU and 34 versus the Saints.
Irving started both games in net for UMass hockey against No. 6 Maine this past week and posted a .934 save percentage for the series making 85 stops with a 3.01 GAA and a 1-1-0 record.
The Newbury, Massachusetts native logged a career high 48 saves in Thursday's loss to the Black Bears and earned the game's No. 3 star. He rebounded by posting 37 saves in his second collegiate shutout, 4-0 over Maine and was tabbed the No. 1 star of the game.
