No. 13 Massachusetts Hockey Drops Series Finale To Omaha, 5-2

October 26, 2025 | Hockey

OMAHA – No. 13 University of Massachusetts hockey fought back to tie the score in the third period, but Omaha netted the final three tallies of the period to defeat the Minutemen 5-2 on Saturday night at Baxter Arena. The loss leaves UMass at 5-2-0 on the year, while the Mavericks improve to 2-2-0.

"I was a little worried about us starting the game like that tonight," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Omaha was going come out angry and I thought I did everything I could to get our guys prepared to play. We were just mentally not ready, so the first 20 minutes were a wash. We give up two goals, take undisciplined penalties. We started playing in the second period and I really liked the way we were playing. I thought the momentum was swinging our way. We tie the game on a beautiful power-play goal, and then their game winning goal was a little frustrating that we had our top defensive pair out there and the kid gets a tap in. We played about we played 30 good minutes, but that wasn't going to be enough tonight."

Omaha struck twice in the first period to build a 2-0 lead. Maxime Pellerin opened the scoring by cleaning up a loose puck at the top of the crease from Sean Tschigerl and Brett Hyland at the 11:30 mark.

The Mavericks then doubled their advantage by converting on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity. Aidan de la Gorgendiere stickhandled down the slot for the finish at 14:37.

Freshman Václav Nestrašil put UMass on the board midway through the second period. After collecting an outlet pass from Landon Nycz and Charlie Lieberman, Nestrašil skated deep into the Omaha zone and banked the puck off the back of goaltender Simon Latkoczy from below the goal line 11:39 into the frame.

Six minutes and 17 seconds into the third period the Minutemen managed to tie the score at two. Following an offensive zone faceoff win on the power play, freshman Jack Galanek curled down the half wall with the puck and sent it down low to Nestrašil behind the net. Nestrašil then fed junior Jack Musa for a one-timer at the hash marks.

However, the Mavericks responded by pulling back in front just 2:12 later. Goaltender Michael Hrabal kicked aside a shot by de la Gorgendiere, but Myles Hilman was alone in the slot to clean up the rebound.

Marcus Nguyen scored an empty net goal from Luke Woodworth and Trevor Wong at the 18:33 mark and Omaha added the final tally 10 seconds later with Brett Hyland finishing off a feed from de la Gorgendiere.

UMass ended the contest with a 30-25 shot advantage and went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Mavericks were 1-for-5.

Hrabal finished the night with 20 saves and Latkoczy totaled 28 stops for Omaha.

The Minutemen will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 31, when the squad will open its two-game home series against No. 19/18 Cornell at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
