Musa’s Last-Minute Goal Lifts No. 13 Massachusetts Hockey Over Omaha, 5-4

October 24, 2025 | Hockey

OMAHA – Junior Jack Musa netted his fifth goal of the season in the final minute of regulation to lift No. 13 University of Massachusetts hockey past Omaha, 5-4 on Friday night at Baxter Arena. With the victory, the Minutemen improve to 5-1-0 on the year, while the Mavericks fall to 1-2-0.

"It was a strange game," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "That's quite a game that we can build off of to come back like that. I really liked our first period. We were in control of the game. We almost made it 4-1 and then I give Omaha credit, they kept playing hard. We kind of fell asleep. But the way we came back and then Jack Musa, the goal he scored, that's just unbelievable compete. Block the shot, win a race, and then, you know, find that puck. I'm really happy for the team. It's tough to win on the road. This team's learning how to win, and we did it in a fashion that most coaches don't want to win that way, but a win's a win. I'm happy for the guys. They found a way."

Omaha opened the scoring just 1:55 into the contest when Trevor Wong picked off a pass in the neutral zone and set up Luke Woodworth on a 2-on-1.

UMass was quick to answer, though. Sophomore Mikey DeAngelo, trailing the rush, cleaned up a loose puck in the slot from Musa and junior Nick VanTassell at the 3:30 mark.

The Minutemen then capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity to pull in front, 2-1. Freshman Lukáš Klecka and VanTassell set up a Larry Keenan one-timer from the top of the left faceoff circle at 7:47.

UMass pushed its lead to 3-1, 4:50 into the second period. Junior Owen Mehlenbacher netted his first as a Minuteman, firing a puck from the blueline through a screen with classmate Cam O'Neill earning the assist.

Omaha responded, however, by scoring the next three of the contest. Mazime Pellerin scored on a deflection at the 6:45 mark of the second with Griffin Ludtke and Aidan de la Gorgendiere earning the assists to bring the score to 3-2.

Tyler Rollwagen knotted things up at 3-3 with a power-play goal from Ludke and Jacob Guevin 13:37 onto the period.

The Mavericks then pulled in front, 4-3, with Pellerin's second of the night, 2:29 into the third period as he cleaned up a rebound in front from Cameron Briere and Jacob Slipec.

Midway through the frame, O'Neill pulled UMass level once more, batting home a rebound in front from senior Lucas Ölvestad and freshman Elias Zimmerman at 11:19.

Musa's game winner in the final minute came as he took a blocked shot up the ice and backhanded in a bouncing puck after his attempt to pass into the slot was batted down. It marked his fifth of the season and team-leading 11th point of the year.

The Minutemen out-shot Omaha, 36-33 and went 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Mavericks were 1-for-3.

Michael Hrabal finished with 29 saves for UMass and Simon Latkoczy turned aside 31 in net for Omaha.

The teams will close out their weekend series tomorrow, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at Baxter Arena.
