Baseball Sweeps St. Bonaventure In Twin Bill

The Minutemen came out on top 4-1 in game one of the doubleheader, and 14-7 in game two.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball completed the sweep over St. Bonaventure University after winning game one of the doubleheader, 4-1, before dominating game two, 14-7, on Saturday at Earl Lorden Field.
The Minutemen improve to 21-23 and 11-7 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while the Bonnies moved to 15-27 and 5-13 in the league.
The victories aided UMass to its third consecutive A-10 series wins, while also marking the second straight sweep over a conference opponent. The last time the Minutemen accomplished in-conference consecutive sweeps was in the 2001 season, as the team swept Saint Joseph's (May 8 – 10) and Xavier (May 12-13).
Massachusetts closes out its eight-game homestand on Tuesday, May 7, against UMass Lowell at 3 p.m. at Earl Lorden Field on ESPN+.
Game 1
Massachusetts 4, St. Bonaventure 1 (9 Innings)
Five Minutemen tallied a hit, including a triple from Braden Sullivan, marking the first of his career. Sullivan recorded a game-high two RBI, followed by Austin Burgess with one.
After two scoreless innings, St. Bonaventure struck first in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly. Massachusetts tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Jake Given singled to left field, before Skagerlind walked. Burgess, then, hit a single of his own to drive in Given.
The game remained knotted through three and a half innings, but the Minutemen broke through in the seventh, plating three runs. Jack Beverly led off with single up the middle, before Marc Willi reached first on a walk. Sullivan hit a two-run triple to right center field to score Beverly and Willi to make it a 3-1. A passed ball allowed Sullivan to cross the plate and extend the Minutemen's lead to 4-1.
UMass held off the Bonnies in the final inning and a half to win 4-1.
Robbie O'Connor (2-5) pitched a complete game, allowing only one run, four hits and striking out three to earn the winning decision. Noah Czajkowski (3-5) took the loss for St. Bonaventure, giving up four runs, with three earned, five hits, two walks and striking out seven in 6.1 innings of work.
Game 2
Massachusetts 14, St. Bonaventure 7 (9 Innings)
Burgess led the team with three hits, including a double and a triple, marking his first as a Minuteman, three runs and three RBI. Kevin Skagerlind followed with two hits, while eight Minutemen contributed a hit. Peters totaled three RBI alongside Burgess, as Mike Gervasi had two and Skagerlind, Carter Hanson and Zack Zaetta had one each. Skagerlind, Sullivan, Matt Travisano, Michael Toth and Peters all registered two runs apiece.
Massachusetts' offense got off to a quick start, tallying five runs in the second frame, which saw an RBI triple from Burgess. The Bonnies plated two in the top of the third, but the Minutemen extended their lead with back-to-back RBI singles from Peters and Skagerlind to make it a 7-2 game.
An RBI single for St. Bonaventure in the top of the fifth helped tack on a run. UMass pushed across five more runs in the bottom half of the inning, though, to lead 12-3. The inning saw a two-run double from Burgess, aiding Toth and Peters across the dish for the Minutemen.
The Bonnies scored three runs in the top of the seventh on a single and a two-RBI homer to cut the deficit in half, but UMass continued to score in the bottom of the frame. A sacrifice fly from Gervasi allowed Skagerlind to score a run, before a single up the middle from Zaetta scored Burgess.
