UMass Baseball’s Season Ends With 12-2 Loss To #7 Saint Joseph’s

The Minutemen finish the year with a 24-29 overall record.

TYSONS, Va. – No. 6 University of Massachusetts baseball faltered to No. 7 Saint Joseph's University, 12-2, in the Atlantic 10 Tournament elimination game on Wednesday night at Capital One Park.
 
The Minutemen concluded the season with an overall record of 24-29, while the Hawks improve to 27-25 on the year.
 
Mike Gervasi, Carter Hanson and Nolan Tichy tallied two hits apiece, as Kevin Skagerlind, Austin Burgess, Matt Travisano and Jack Beverly followed with one each. Gervasi recorded his 15th home run of the season, while Hanson and Tichy registered doubles on the night. Skagerlind and Gervasi scored UMass' two runs, and Gervasi and Hanson totaled an RBI each.
 
Saint Joseph's took an early, 1-0, lead in the top of the opening frame with a solo home run. Massachusetts answered back with a solo shot from Gervasi in the bottom half of the inning to bring the game to a 1-1 tie. It marked the 15th home run of the year for Gervasi.
 
The Hawks scored another run in the third to reclaim the lead, before adding six more in the fourth to make it an 8-1 contest. SJU tacked on another run in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to 9-1. The Minutemen plated one run on the board in the bottom half of the inning, making it a 9-2 game. Skagerlind reached first after being hit by a pitch, before a single from Gervasi helped Skagerlind into scoring position. Hanson doubled down the right field line, driving home Skagerlind.
 
Saint Joseph's added three runs to its total in the top of the ninth to close the game out with a 12-2 win over UMass.
 
Robbie O'Connor (3-6) went 3.1 innings allowing six runs, with four earned, four hits, two walks and striking out three for UMass to take the loss. Will McCausland (4-4) earned the win for Saint Joseph's, giving up two runs on seven hits, walking three and dealing eight strikeouts in six innings of work.
