Minutemen Dominate Game Two, 12-2, In Doubleheader Split With Elon

Massachusetts took game two from the Phoenix, as the Phoenix came away with the 10-0 win in game one.
UMass' 12 runs in game two were the most this season, while the team also totaled season-highs in hits (16) and RBI (12).
Massachusetts and Elon conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Latham Park on FloBaseball.
Game 1
Elon 10, Massachusetts 0
Four Minutemen in Kevin Skagerlind, Matt Travisano, Jack Beverly and Marc Willi recorded one hit each, with Travisano hitting a double.
Elon got on the board first, plating three runs in the second. The Phoenix added another run on a sacrifice fly to take a 4-0 lead in the third. A double from Elon in the fifth pushed across two runs, before a run scored on a throwing error extended its lead to 7-0.
A homer for the Phoenix made it a 9-0 contest in the sixth frame. Elon notched one more run in the eighth to close out the first game of the day with a 10-0 win, due to a run-rule.
Max LeBlanc (0-1) had the loss for Massachusetts, allowing three runs, one hit, four walks and striking out one in 1.2 innings. Renn Lints took over on the mound for 3.2 frames, giving up six runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out three, while Andrew Middleton entered the game to toss 1.2 innings. Middleton allowed one run on one hit and dealt a career-high three strikeouts.
Justin Mitrovich (2-1) had the win for Elon, pitching six complete innings with three hits, three walks and 10 strikeouts.
Game 2
Massachusetts 12, Elon 2
Jake Given led the way going for 3-for-4, including his first double of the season, to go along with two runs and a team-best three RBI. Skagerlind, Travisano, Beverly and Braden Sullivan followed with two hits apiece, while Beverly and Willi had two runs each and Sullivan matched a team-high three RBI. Willi and Sullivan also recorded doubles on the evening, as Austin Burgess registered his first home run of the year to drive in two runs. Beverly also totaled two RBI.
UMass struck first in the third, to make it a 2-0 game. Given started off the inning with a single, before Skagerlind singled through the right side. With one out, Travisano hit a RBI single to center field allowing Given to come home. A ground out sacrifice bunt from Carter Hanson helped Skagerlind score from third.
After a fly out, Willi was walked to start the fourth inning and Sullivan singled up the middle. A wild pitch advanced Willi and Sullivan into scoring position, as a RBI from Given on a fielder's choice aided Willi to cross home plate to extend the Minutemen's lead, 3-0.
With Gervasi and Beverly on third and second, respectively, in the sixth, Gervasi tagged up on Sullivan's sacrifice fly to score and advance Beverly into scoring position. Beverly then came home on a RBI single from Given to give the Minutemen a 5-0 lead.
Massachusetts tallied seven runs in the top of the seventh to keep pulling ahead. Travisano started off the inning with a walk, before Hanson doubled to right field. Beverly hit a two RBI single with Travisano and Hanson crossing the plate to make it a 7-0 game. Back-to-back-to-back doubles for the Minutemen saw Willi keep the bats hot and place Beverly on third. Sullivan stepped up to the plate, registering the first double of his career, bringing Beverly and Willi around to home to lead 9-0. Sullivan stole third, before Given hit a double of his own down the right field line, allowing Sullivan to score and lead 10-0. Burgess hit a two-run long ball, his first of the year, extending UMass' lead to 12-0.
Elon tallied two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play for the Minutemen and a strikeout for Leif Bigelow closed the game in a run-rule with UMass on top, 12-2.
Sam Belliveau (2-1) received the victory for the Minutemen, tossing six completed innings, and allowing two runs, nine hits, three walks and struck out one. Bigelow entered in the bottom of the seventh, walking two and striking out one in his lone inning pitched. Ben Sieracki (1-2) had the loss for the Phoenix, giving up five runs on seven hits, two walks and six punchouts.
