Duerr’s Three-Point Night Helps #18/17 Massachusetts Hockey To 3-3 Tie At Vermont
November 08, 2024 | Hockey
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman James Duerr factored in all three goals to help No. 17/18 University of Massachusetts hockey skate to a 3-3 tie at Vermont on Friday night. The Catamounts did however take the extra point in the Hockey East standings with a 1-0 shootout victory. The Minutemen are now 4-3-2 on the year, 0-1-2 in Hockey East, while UVM sits at 1-4-3, 1-2-2 in league action.
"I thought UVM came out the first 10 minutes and really were flying," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We got our feet under us, and I liked our last 50 minutes. You know, a couple penalties kind of took the momentum away from us, but I was happy with our game. You get to the shootout and to me it's a coin toss, but I liked our game for 50 minutes."
UMass opened the scoring 3:22 into the contest when junior Owen Murray went bar down from the top of the slot after sophomore Bo Cosman and Duerr started the play off the half wall.
The Catamounts tied the score at 1-1, converting on the first power play of the night at 9:53. Jax Wismer and Max Strand set up a wrister that found its way through a screen from the right point.
Before the close of the period, the Minutemen pulled back in front by a goal. Sophomore Nick VanTassell circled the offensive zone before dropping the puck off for graduate student Linden Alger who fired a shot on target that was stopped by Keenan Rancier. Duerr was there in front, however to pounce on the loose puck, lunging forward to poke it home into the open net for his first of his collegiate career at the 15:46 mark.
On the first shift of the second period, UVM leveled the score at 2-2. Simon Jellus fired home a pass from Colin Kessler and Wismer from the high slot 33 seconds into the frame.
The Catamounts then pulled in front at the 11:33 mark with Xavier Henry picking a corner from the point as Isak Walther and Strand collected the helpers.
Midway through the third period, Duerr picked up his second tally of the night. After Francesco Dell'Elce's shot off a d-to-d pass from Lucas Ölvestad was knocked down in front, Duerr was there to crash the net and hammer home the rebound through a crowd 8:06 into the frame.
Despite a power play chance for Vermont in overtime, neither side could find the game winner. Joel Maatta was the lone skater to score in the shootout, giving the Catamounts the 1-0 shootout win.
UVM finished with a 34-24 shot advantage and was 1-for-3 on the power play, while UMass was 0-for-1.
Michael Hrabal totaled 31 saves in net for the Minutemen and Rancier turned aside 21 for Vermont.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow, November 9, with game two of the weekend set for 7 p.m. at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
