#15 Massachusetts Hockey Comes Up Short At UConn, 3-2
October 26, 2024 | Hockey
STORRS, Conn. – No. 15 University of Massachusetts hockey scored twice after trailing 3-0, but was unable to complete the comeback, falling to UConn at Toscano Family Ice Forum 3-2 on Saturday night. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 3-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Hockey East, while the Huskies improve to 4-2-1, 1-1-1 in league action.
"I really liked our start and how we came out," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought we were doing a great job. We get a power play, and then we make a high-risk play, and it's in the back of our net. Then UConn took over for the next 20 minutes. Another bad turnover by our defense leads to another goal. In the third period we played some good road hockey and found a way make the game close. That's what you get. We got what we deserved tonight."
UConn opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal by Jake Percival when he caused a turnover on the UMass power play and took it up the ice alone to beat Michael Hrabal on the breakaway at 13:35 of the first period.
Percival added another after a lengthy offensive possession in the Minutemen zone, tucking the puck around the outstretched right pad of Hrabal at the 7:13 mark of the second. Trey Scott and Hugh Larkin earned the assists.
UConn then pushed its advantage to 3-0, 15:36 into the period. Joey Muldowney finished off a give-and-go from Jake Richard at the net front.
UMass took one of the goals back at 16:48 of the second. Sophomore Dans Locmelis won an offensive zone draw back to junior Cole O'Hara who gave the puck to senior Linden Alger at the left point. Alger sent a low shot through traffic into the back of the UConn goal for his second tally of the season.
On their fourth man advantage of the third period, the Minutemen climbed back to within one. Jack Musa poked home a second attempt at the goal mouth on a play where Aydar Suniev sent the puck low to Dans Locmelis along the goal line and Locmelis sent a centering pass to Musa out front for the score at 15:06.
With Hrabal to the bench for the final 1:23 of the contest, UMass attempted to find the equalizer with an extra attacker for a second straight night but was unable to put another past Tyler Muszelik who finished with 27 saves for UConn. Hrabal totaled 25 stops for the Minutemen.
UMass edged UConn in shots, 29-28 and went 1-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The Minutemen will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 2, when the squad will travel to Springfield to take on AIC at 1 p.m.
