UMass Comes Up Short Against Saint Louis, 79-75.

Alexsia Rose tied her career high in points with 18 while setting a new career high in assists with eight.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball team fell to Saint Louis at the Mullins Center on Saturday afternoon, 79-75. The Minutewomen return to action on Wednesday, January 10th, as they head to Richmond for an 11 a.m. tip.
 
Alexsia Rose led the way for the Minutewomen, setting a career high in assists with eight and tying a career high in points with 18. Stefanie Kulesza also had 18 points while knocking down a career best four threes and Kristin Williams finished with 17 points in the loss.
 
Coming out of the gate, UMass was dialed from deep, knocking down five threes on 50% shooting from beyond the arc. Stefanie Kulesza hit a pair of threes while Kristin Williams made one as the duo finished the first quarter with eight points and five points respectively. Senior guard Alexsia Rose dished out four assists while scoring four points to help UMass hold a 21-16 advantage after the first quarter.
 
After the Billikens pulled within a pair in the first five minutes of the second frame, Williams knocked down back-to-back pull up jumpers to push the UMass lead to 29-23. Coming out of the media timeout, Chinenye Odenigbo scored her first two baskets as UMass led the Billikens 33-28 with 2:45 remaining in the quarter. UMass would finish the quarter making six of their last eight shots, capped by a Kulesza three pointer late to send the Minutewomen into halftime with a 38-33 lead.
 
Kulesza hit her fourth three of the game, at the 9:38 mark to put UMass up five to start the third. The junior followed it up by scoring in the paint to cap an 8-0 run and give UMass its first double digit lead of the game as they held a 49-39 advantage. After the Billikens went on a run of their own, Rose got downhill and finished at the rim while drawing a foul. The three-point play gave her a season high 13 points and had UMass up 54-50 with 3:11 left in the third. Late in the quarter, Rose recorded her  seventh assist on a Hyduke three pointer to put UMass up 59-55 with under a minute a play. After three quarters, UMass was ahead 60-57.
 
After Saint Louis pulled ahead early in the fourth, Lilly Taulelei grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a put back to tie the game at 64-64. During what was a back and forth fourth quarter, Bre Bellamy recorded one of her three steals which led to a Kulesza fast break layup to tie the game at 66 all with 6:30 remaining. With 3:12 remaining, Rose knocked down a three to tie her career high in points with 18 and give the Minutewomen a 71-69 lead. Saint Louis would go on to reclaim the lead and not look back as UMass dropped a heart breaker, 79-75.
