Minutewomen Fall Short On The Road At Richmond, 79-65

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team fell to Richmond on the road Wednesday afternoon at the Robins Center, 79-65. Kristin Williams led the Minutewomen with a tied for career-high 19 points, including a stretch of seven straight to start the third quarter.
Alexsia Rose joined Williams in double figures for the second consecutive game as she chipped in 13 points while Stefanie Kulesza added 12 and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Minutewomen opened the game by shooting 4-of-8 from the field and took a 9-7 lead with six minutes to go in the first after a Lilly Taulelei block led to a Kulesza bucket on the other end. The Spiders followed with a 7-0 run to take a 14-9 lead with under four minutes left. Richmond shot 64-percent from the field in the first while holding UMass to 31-percent to build a 19-13 lead after the first 10 minutes of action. UMass forced Richmond into six turnovers in the half and recorded steals on all six, led by two from Kulesza.
UMass shot an improved 54-percent from the field in the second quarter, led by a 3-of-3 effort from Kristin Williams. UMass ended the half on a 7-2 run after Richmond built its first double digit lead at 33-22 with 3:03 to go. Richmond shot an even 50-percent in the first 20 minutes and converted on five shots from 3-point range to build a 35-29 lead at the break.
The scoring run for the Minutewomen bloomed to a 14-2 stretch after Williams picked up where she left off in the second quarter, scoring seven straight points for UMass to make it a 36-35 lead with 8:36 to go in the third. Richmond followed with five consecutive points before a quick 4-0 run capped off by an Alexsia Rose steal and layup at the other end made it a 40-40 game near the halfway point of the third. Richmond followed with another scoring run, this a 7-0 spurt that saw the home team take a 47-40 lead before a Tori Hyduke triple broke the scoring run. The Spiders held a 54-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
After missing its first shot of the fourth, UMass followed by knocking down five of its next seven attempts from the field capped off by triples from Williams and Dallas Pierce to bring UMass back within five at 62-57 with 6:03 remaining. Richmond answered with a 11-0 run after UMass pulled within five once again, knocking down six of its next eight shots to build a 75-59 advantage with just under two to go.
UMass concludes its two-game road trip on Saturday at La Salle with a 3 p.m. tip-off on ESPN+. The Minutewomen return to the Mullins Center on Wednesday, Jan. 17 for a 6 p.m. tip against Loyola Chicago.
