AMHERST, Mass. – Emma Barrett has been added to the Massachusetts rowing staff as an assistant coach, while Steph Chivers has been elevated to associate head coach. Â
Barrett joins the UMass staff after spending last season as Washington State University's Director of Women's Rowing Operations. Â
"We are super excited to bring in Emma Barrett this Fall as our newest staff member," head coach Eric Carcich said. "Emma is coming to us with an abundance of experience having rowed and worked at Washington State University for the last six years. She took multiple trips to the NCAA's as an athlete and gained valuable experience as a Coach and Operations Director on their staff. She's moving back East with fantastic energy and enthusiasm to round out our staff."Â
As Washington State's Director of Operations, Barrett planned all team travel, including hotels, meals, transportation and organized regattas. She also created itineraries for travel and race days, communicated with facilities and the business office on financial and logistical matters and assisted with on-campus recruiting efforts. In the summer of 2022, Barrett also served as the United States Junior National Rowing Team's intern.Â
Barrett was an accomplished, five-year rower at Washington State where she spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons in the First Varsity 8. The team placed 15th overall at the 2021 NCAA Championships and fourth at the 2021 PAC-12 Championship. She was a member of the team's Leadership Council as a senior. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Psychology and earned the Cougar Academic Award and was named to the President's Honor Roll.Â
Chivers will be embarking upon her fifth season with UMass in 2023-24. Â
"We are equally excited for Steph Chivers to be elevated to Associate Head Coach," Carcich continued. "Over the years, Steph has continued to find ways to better herself as a coach, continued to bring new ideas to the table for our team and continued to be a strong core member of our staff throughout our first four years at UMass. Elevating her to Associate Head Coach was an easy decision, and I am excited for many more years working together at UMass."Â
Chivers joined the UMass staff in Fall 2019, arriving at UMass after spending the previous four years at Cornell, including the 2018-19 season under Carcich. She graduated from UConn in 2007 with a Bachelor's Degree in sports coaching and administration, before adding a Master's Degree in sport psychology from Ithaca the following year. She is a native of Dalton, Massachusetts.Â
