UMass finished with 36 points
SARATOGA, N.Y. -- The University of Massachusetts rowing team placed third in the 2023 Atlantic 10 rowing championship on Friday at Fish Creek. The A-10 teams were vying for a ticket to the 2023 NCAA Championships by competing for a team points trophy in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four.Â
Massachusetts placed fourth in the varsity four final (9:17.856), the second varsity eight final (8:17.343) and the varsity eight final (7:47.594) to earn 36 points and a third-place showing. George Washington finished first with 52 points, followed by Rhode Island with 49 points.
"I will admit it was a challenging day for UMass as we have made a lot of progress as a team this spring," head coach Eric Carcich said. "I don't feel like that progress ultimately showed in our racing today. This third-place finish matches our result from last year so it is a hard pill to swallow knowing the progress we have made as a unit. I am tremendously proud of this team and want to give a huge thank you to the seniors who wrapped up their four year journey with us this weekend. I would also like to congratulate George Washington in their first NCAA bid and wish them luck in two weeks.
UMass also placed fourth in the third varsity eight final (8:34.550).
In the morning prelims, the varsity four posted an 8:24.702, while the second varsity eight checked in at 7:23.202 and the varsity eight was at 7:12.253.Â
