Big Second Quarter Helps Women’s Basketball To 63-50 Victory Over George Mason, To Advance To The A-10 Semifinals

WILMINGTON, Del. – No. 1 University of Massachusetts women's basketball found a rhythm in the second quarter to help come away with a 63-50 victory over No. 9-seeded George Mason University in the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals at the CHASE Fieldhouse on Friday morning to move on to the Semifinals Round.
UMass improved to 25-5 on the season, while George Mason finishes with a 16-15 record on the year. Massachusetts will play in its third consecutive A-10 Semifinals game, and eighth in program history.
Ber'Nyah Mayo led the Minutewomen in points with 15, while Sydney Taylor and Sam Breen followed with 13 and 10, respectively. Breen grabbed nine rebounds with Angelique Ngalakulondi coming down with eight boards of her own. Destiney Philoxy totaled a team best three assists and shot 80.0 percent (4-of-5) from the charity stripe. Mayo and Breen registered a game-high four steals apiece.
Massachusetts outscored George Mason in points off turnovers, 23-12, and in second chance points, 16-13.
George Mason got the early jump in the opening quarter, going on an 11-5 run throughout the first seven minutes of the contest. Two jumpers from Breen and a layup from Makennah White gave UMass a 4-3 edge in the final two minutes and 51 seconds to get back within five at 14-9 to end the first.
Massachusetts picked up the pace in the second quarter, starting a 10-4 run of its own, capped by two made free throws from Mayo to close the gap to one. With the score at 18-17, in favor of the Patriots, Ngalakulondi gave the Minutewomen their first lead of the game with a layup. The two teams traded seven points apiece, exchanging the lead four times. Breen closed out the first half with a made layup with only three seconds remaining to help UMass to tight 26-25 lead.
A 10-6 run for the Minutewomen, which saw back-to-back three-pointers from Philoxy and Stefanie Kulesza, extended their lead to five in the third quarter at 36-31. George Mason secured six more points to UMass' five, but Massachusetts held on to a 41-37 lead heading into the final frame.
The Minutewomen offense got hot, going on a 16-6 run, elapsing six minutes and six seconds of the fourth to put them ahead 57-43. Taylor, Philoxy and Ngalakulondi combined for UMass' 16 points in the run, with Taylor scoring six on two triples at both the 8:00 mark and the 5:39 mark. The Patriots grabbed seven more points, while the Minutewomen tallied six, but Massachusetts ran away with it to earn the 63-50 victory.
