Four Finish In Double Figures As Women’s Basketball Heads To A-10 Finals With 80-60 Win Over Richmond

Philoxy, Breen, White and Mayo reach double figures, while Breen records a double-double in the Semifinals Round.
WILMINGTON, Del. – Four Minutewomen tallied double figures to help the No. 1-seeded University of Massachusetts women's basketball advance to the Atlantic 10 Finals after defeating No. 5-seeded University of Richmond, 80-60, at the CHASE Fieldhouse on Saturday morning.
UMass improved to 26-5 on the season, tying the most wins in program history with last season's total, while Richmond finished with a 20-10 record on the year. Massachusetts will play in its third consecutive A-10 Championship game, and fourth in program history.
Destiney Philoxy was 5-for-8 (.625) from the field and went 6-of-7 (.857) from the charity stripe to lead the team with 16 points on the day. Sam Breen and Makennah White totaled 14 points each, while Ber'Nyah Mayo added 13 of her own. Breen grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, to garner her 17th double-double of the season, and 57th of her career. White followed Breen, coming down with seven boards, while registering a team best two steals. Philoxy, Breen and Sydney Taylor contributed four assists apiece.
Massachusetts outrebounded Richmond, 35-25, and outscored the Spiders in points off turnovers, 15-11, second chance points 14-4, fast break points 11-5 and in bench points, 23-16.
After Richmond opened the scoring, UMass began a 14-4 run elapsing eight minutes and eight seconds of the first quarter. The run included two three-pointers from Breen and Stefanie Kulesza. Richmond went on a small 5-0 run with 43 seconds left on the clock, but Taylor knocked down a three with 23 seconds on the clock, closing out the first with a 17-9 Massachusetts lead.
The Spiders claimed a 21-20 lead at the 6:49 mark, before extending it to 25-22, with a 16-5 run. Taylor hit her second triple of the day to knot the game up at 25 apiece, while Breen's made free throw gave the Minutewomen the 26-25 edge. Richmond grabbed the lead at 28-26 with a three-pointer, but Angelique Ngalakulondi's layup tied up the game once more at 28-28. The two teams traded two points each, before White made a layup with 36 seconds remaining, to give UMass a 32-30 lead heading into halftime.
The Minutewomen came out hot in the third, going on a 13-8 run to lead 45-38 at the 5:22 mark. The Spiders cut UMass' lead to five, but a 10-2 run for Massachusetts allowed the Minutewomen to hold a 13-point lead at 55-42.
UMass continued its run into the final frame, making it 18-6, capped by a three from Mayo, to maintain a steady 63-46 lead over Richmond. The Spiders edged the Minutewomen in points, 10-8, in the next run, but UMass still held on to the lead, 71-56. Massachusetts put up nine more points, while Richmond scored four more, aiding UMass to an 80-60 victory in the A-10 Semifinals.
