AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team plays its final road contest of the regular season on Wednesday evening at Duquesne. The Minutemen and Dukes tip-off from the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
Series With Duquesne
UMass holds a 41-29 all-time series lead over Duquesne dating back to the first meeting between the two teams during the 1974-75 season. The Minutemen picked up an 87-79 win over the Dukes on Jan. 28 behind a career-high 31 points from RJ Luis and a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double from Dyondre Dominguez.
Bench Boost
The Minutemen lead the Atlantic 10 and rank 13th nationally in bench points per game at 28.1. UMass has outscored its opponent's bench in 19 games and has been outscored just six times.
Crashing The Boards
UMass leads the Atlantic 10 in offensive rebounds per game at 12.5 and rank 21st nationally in the category. The Minutemen are second in the A-10 in rebounds per game at 37.8 and rank inside the top-35 among DI teams in the category.
Freshman 40
Three true freshmen combined for 40 of UMass' 69 points and each reached double figures in the road win against Rhode Island. Keon Thompson set a new career-high with 15 points on 6-of-11 (.600) from the field while RJ Luis added 14 on 7-of-11 (.636). Tafara Gapare added 11 points and went 2-of-4 from deep.
Defensive Dominance
The Minutemen gave up a season-low 45 points in the Feb. 18 win at Rhode Island and held the Rams to just 19 points in the second half. The half marked the first time since Feb. 26, 2019 against VCU that the Minutemen have held an opponent to under 20 points in a half. The game also marked the first time since the Feb. 19, 2011 game against URI that UMass has held an opponent to under 30-percent from the field.
Kante Among Active Leaders
Isaac Kante ranks 43rd among active Division I leaders in career rebounds with 830 and ranks 44th in career double-doubles with 21.
Looking Ahead
UMass concludes the regular season on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the Mullins Center against St. Bonaventure in a nationally televised matchup on USA. The game also marks senior night for the Minutemen and is a Legacy Game featuring the 'cursive U' uniforms.
Atlantic 10 Championship
Atlantic 10 Championship play begins for the league on Tuesday, March 7 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The new conference tournament format begins with three games on the opening Tuesday with an off day scheduled for Friday following the quarterfinals matchups.
