Women’s Basketball Share A-10 Regular Season Title With 84-61 Victory Over George Washington

AMHERST, Mass. – An early offensive spark paced the University of Massachusetts Women's Basketball team to an 84-61 victory over George Washington University on Saturday evening at the Mullins Center to clinch a share of the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Title. Graduate student Sam Breen recorded her 16th double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow teammate Destiney Philoxy scored 15 points on Senior Day.
UMass finished the regular season with a 24-5 overall record and a 14-2 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while George Washington dropped to 17-12 overall and 9-7 in the league. The 14 A-10 wins are the most for the Minutewomen in program history.
In addition to Breen and Philoxy, Makennah White, Ber'Nyah Mayo and Sydney Taylor all reached double figures with 14, 12 and 11 points, respectively. Breen dished out a game-high seven assists, while White led the team in steals with two. Taylor registered the lone block for UMass.
Massachusetts shot 49.3 percent (33-for-67) from the field, including 50.0 percent (8-for-16) from beyond the arc. The Minutewomen outrebounded the Colonials, 44-31.
UMass' offense clicked early as Philoxy knocked down her first three of the evening at the 6:55 mark of the first quarter to give the Minutewomen a 5-3 lead. The two teams tied at 5-5, before George Washington made a three-pointer to take a brief 8-5 lead. Philoxy answered with her second triple at 5:01 to knot it up at eight apiece. Philoxy's bucket began a 24-8 run for Massachusetts, elapsing five minutes and four seconds, to claim a 29-16 lead.
The run continued, making it 26-8, with a made layup from Taylor, extending the lead to 31-16. The Colonials went on a 12-6 run, closing the gap to nine, but a 9-1 run for the Minutewomen gave UMass an 18-point lead at 46-29 at the half.
Massachusetts entered the third quarter hot, extending its run from the second frame to 15-2, to lead 52-30 at 6:56. The two teams kept the scoring close, as UMass put 15 more points to George Washington's 12, with the Minutewomen pushing their lead to 67-42. George Washington grabbed 19 points to edge out UMass' 17 in the final frame, but Massachusetts ran away with the lead and came out on top with an 84-61 victory.
Massachusetts gets set for Atlantic 10 Conference Championships on Wednesday, March 1, through Sunday, March 5, in Wilmington, Delaware. Seedings will be determined on Saturday night, along with game day, times and opponents for the Minutewomen.
