UMass had 32 shots on goal
BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision at No. 15/14 Northeastern on Saturday night at Matthews Arena to split the weekend series.
Devon Levi made 32 saves for the Huskies to earn the shutout.
"It was a little bit of a frustrating game after last night when I really liked the way we played," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We had a lot of guys who looked a little gassed, maybe last night was a little emotional with senior night for us. I thought we were missing some jump. Our special teams usually are pretty strong but I thought our power play let us down tonight and we didn't find a way ... Levi is a good goalie but I didn't feel like we tested him tonight."
Massachusetts finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while Northeastern was 1-for-3 and added a shorthanded goal.
Cole Brady finished with 22 saves as UMass out-shot the Huskies 32-26.
The Minutemen had the first good chance in the game but Reed Lebster's snapshot from the high slot hit the post a minute and a half into the opening period.
After being forced to kill off a pair of Northeastern power plays, UMass went on its first power play of the night but it was Northeastern who took the lead on a Jack Williams shorthanded tally at 13:19. The Huskies would hold that 1-0 lead after one, with Brady totaling nine saves in the period.
Northeastern used a goal by Jack Hughes and a power-play tally from Sam Colangelo for a 3-0 lead after the second period of play.
Fontaine made it a 4-0 game at 12:16 of the third when he finished off a 2-on-1 rush, electing to take the shot for his tenth goal of the season.
The Minutemen close out the regular season next weekend with a two-game series at Maine on March 3-4. Both Friday and Saturday's games will begin at 7 p.m.
