#18/17 Massachusetts Hockey Rolls Past RIT, 5-1
October 10, 2026 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. ā Senior Jack Musa and freshman Maxim Massé combined for seven points to help No. 18/17 Massachusetts hockey roll to a 5-1 win over RIT on Saturday night at the Mullins Center. With the victory, the Minutemen improve to 1-2-1 on the year, while the Tigers sit at 1-2-1 as well.
"I went into the game just wanting to get better than we were last night," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought we did, but not in the first period. I thought RIT came out with more jump than we did. We got up by two goals and then let up a goal very late in the period, which was tough one. But the team really rose in the second period. I thought that fourth line, the freshman line, really came out and buzzed, and power play got going. We started shooting the puck on the power play, got rewarded for it, and then just RIT faded. But I thought we took a step forward as a team tonight, and we have every game. I've been way more concerned about improvement of individual players in the team and I'm seeing that through four games."
Late in the first period junior Larry Keenan opened the scoring with a one-timer blast from the right point as sophomore Lukáš Klecka set him up with a feed across the slot. Sophomore Justin Kerr picked up the secondary on the tally that came at the 16:27 mark.
Freshman Egor Barabanov doubled the UMass lead moments later at 19:11. Trailing the play, Barabanov finished off a pass from Massé and Musa in the middle of the zone for his second of the season.
Just 38 seconds later, RIT responded with its lone goal of the contest, that brought the score to 2-1 heading into the first intermission. Nick De Angelis collected the puck from Zach Wigle and Christian Catalano and split the UMass defense to find his way to the net for the tally.
The Minutemen responded 4:53 into the second with sophomore co-captain Coleson Hanrahan's first collegiate goal as he buried a bouncing puck from Musa and Massé at the hash marks.
UMass then pulled away with a pair of power-play goals. The first came at the 7:41 mark with Barabanov taking the puck from Musa and finding sophomore Václav Nestrašil at the net front for the stuff-in finish. Massé then potted his first career tally 15:19 into the frame as Musa picked up his fourth helper of the night.
The Minutemen nearly doubled up the Tigers in shots at 46-23 and went 2-for-4 with the man advantage while going 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Ehtan Eskit made 22 saves to earn his first career win and Collin Mackenzie stopped 41 in net for RIT.
UMass will be back in action next Friday, October 16, when the squad will open Hockey East play against Northeastern at the Mullins Center. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
