Massachusetts Hockey Falls To Boston College, 7-3

February 17, 2023 | Hockey

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Unable to overcome a 5-0 first period deficit, Massachusetts hockey fell at Boston College, 7-3 on Friday night. The setback leaves the Minutemen at 10-15-5 overall (4-12-3 HE), while the Eagles improve to 11-12-6 (6-8-5 HE).

"I didn't mind the start of our game," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought the first three or four shifts the kids came out and looked like they were eager to compete. Boston College picked things up and we needed a couple saves to stop the onslaught and we just didn't get them. The rest of the game, they're up that much, they lost some urgency to their game and we competed a little bit harder and made it look like a hockey game for the last two periods."

BC opened the scoring at the 7:48 mark of the first period when Colby Ambrosio picked the puck up from Oskar Jelvik and Charlie Leddy, circled the UMass zone and wristed it past goaltender Luke Pavicich in close.

The Eagles doubled their lead 14 minutes into the frame as Mike Posma backhanded in a rebound from the top of the crease from Will Traeger and Mitch Andres.

Just 1:03 later, Nikita Nesterenko added the third for Boston College, while Jelvik and Marshall Warren followed with two more at 17:09 and 18:34, respectively, to give the Eagles a 5-0 advantage after one period of play.

Nesterenko added another on a five-minute major 8:31 into the second period.

Matt Koopman put the Minutemen on the board just 16 seconds later on a 2-on-0 break, finishing off a feed from freshman Owen Murray in alone on Mitch Benson shorthanded.

Koopman added his second of the night from freshman Kennedy O'Connor and senior Jerry Harding, putting home a loose puck amidst a scramble in front on a delayed penalty call at the 14:32 mark.

Freshman Kenny Connors converted on the power play 11:08 into the third period from sophomores Scott Morrow and Ryan Ufko to cut the deficit to 6-3, but Nesterenko responded less than a minute later, capping the scoring with the third goal of his hat trick.

Boston College edged UMass in shots, 33-32 as Berenson finished with 29 stops for the Eagles. The Minutemen's three netminders played one period apiece. Pavicich had 13 saves in the first, Henry Graham turned aside eight in the second and Cole Brady logged five saves in the third.

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow, Feb 18, at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
