Second Half Rally Gives Women’s Basketball 73-69 Win Over Richmond

White records 13 points and 10 rebounds all in the second half for second double-double of the season.

AMHERST, Mass. – A second half surge allowed the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team to come away with a 73-69 triumph over the University of Richmond on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.  Junior Makennah White registered 13 points and 10 rebounds, all in the second half, to earn her second double-double of the year and fourth of her career.  
 
UMass grabbed its seventh straight win to improve to 18-4 overall and 8-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Richmond dropped to 13-8 overall and 3-5 in the league.
 
Sam Breen led the Minutewomen with 21 points and five assists, while adding nine boards on the night, one steal and UMass' lone block. Ber'Nyah Mayo followed with 14 points and a game-high four steals, as Sydney Taylor (11) and Destiney Philoxy (10) also reached double figures.
 
Massachusetts shot 77.8 percent (14-for-18) from the charity stripe and outrebounded Richmond, 45-29.  
 
Philoxy opened the scoring with a three-pointer to give UMass an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter, before Richmond scored back-to-back baskets to take a 4-3 lead. Mayo helped the Minutewomen reclaim the lead at 5-4 at the 7:40 mark, but a triple from the Spiders put them back on top, 7-5. The two teams tied the game up at 7-7, thanks to two made free throws from Mayo, and once more at 10-10 with both Richmond and UMass knocking down three-pointers. The Spiders went on a 13-6 run to close out the quarter with a 23-16 lead.  
 
The Minutewomen began the second with a 9-3 run, including a triple from Taylor at 9:19, to close the gap to one, making it a 26-25 contest, in favor of Richmond. The Spiders pulled ahead, 30-25, but Taylor hit a three to put Massachusetts back within two. Richmond started a small 7-3 run to extend its lead by six, entering halftime ahead, 37-31.
 
UMass went on a small 5-3 run to keep it a close game, as Richmond led 40-36. An 8-2 run gave the Spiders their largest lead of the game with 5:56 left in the third quarter with a score of 48-38, but a 9-4 run for the Minutewomen cut the lead Richmond's 10-point lead in half at 52-47. Massachusetts put up four more points in the final minute of the quarter to head into the final frame down one-point, 52-51.
 
Massachusetts continued its run from the third into the fourth quarter, making it 11-0, elapsing for three minutes and 34 seconds to claim a 58-52 lead. The two teams traded six points apiece with UMass holding on to a 64-58 lead. The Spiders started a 9-6 run to make it a three-point contest, with the Minutewomen leading 70-67. In the final five seconds of the game, Massachusetts sank three of four free throws to Richmond's two, to win 73-69.  
 
Massachusetts heads to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to match up with La Salle on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
