Women’s Basketball Defeats La Salle, 66-42, To Pick Up Eighth Consecutive Win

Three Minutewomen record double-doubles en route to the victory.
PHILADELPHIA – Three Minutewomen record double-doubles to help the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team to a 66-42 victory over La Salle University at Tom Gola Arena on Saturday afternoon. Senior Sydney Taylor garnered her first career double-double, registering a team-high 26 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Angelique Ngalakulondi and graduate student Sam Breen also finished with double-doubles.
UMass picked up its eighth straight win to improve to 19-4 overall and 9-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while La Salle dropped to 14-10 overall and 5-4 in the league.
Ngalkulondi completed the day with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Breen scored 10 points and grabbed a game best 15 boards. Destiney Philoxy and Ber'Nyah Mayo led the team with five assists, as Mayo had a team-high three steals.
Massachusetts outrebounded La Salle, 47-30.
Both UMass and La Salle got off to a slow start, with the Explorers scoring the first two points of the contest at the 6:04 mark. La Salle added two more points to lead 4-0, before a driving layup from Makennah White put the Minutewomen on the board and beginning a 9-0 run. A layup by Taylor brought the game to a 4-4 draw, while Stefanie Kulesza knocked down a three to give UMass its first lead at 7-4. Taylor added two more points for Massachusetts to close out the run as La Salle put up three more points, with UMass leading, 9-7, at the end of the first quarter.
A 23-9 run elapsing six minutes and 18 seconds pushed the Minutewomen ahead, 32-16, in the second quarter. In the run, Taylor hit two triples, while Breen made one three-pointer. The Explorers went on a small 5-0 run to close out the first half, as UMass held on to a 32-21 lead.
The two teams kept the scoring close early in the third quarter, as La Salle put up five points to UMass' four with 6:45 remaining. The Minutewomen grabbed nine more points to edge the Explorers' seven points, to maintain a 45-33 lead heading into the fourth. In the final frame, Massachusetts scored 21 points to La Salle's nine to win 66-42.
Massachusetts faces Fordham on Wednesday, Feb. 8, for a 7 p.m. match up at the Mullins Center on NESN+/ESPN+.
