UMass Rallies From Down 15, Falls Short At Yale 70-62

The Minutewomen rallied back from down 15 to tie early in the fourth, but fell short to the Bulldogs.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team came back from down 15 to make it a tie ballgame early in the fourth, but fell short at Yale on Friday evening, 70-62. The Minutewomen rallied back from down 15 at 34-19 with 0:33 left in the half and tied things up at 48-48 early in the fourth quarter.
Lilly Taulelei finished with a team-high 13 points on six-of-eight from the field while Tori Hyduke added eight points, five rebounds, and a team-leading four assists. Jermany Mapp and Lilly Ferguson each added eight points while Chinenye Odenigbo finished with six points on 3-of-3 from the field in her UMass debut.
UMass took an early 5-3 lead after a Kristin Williams 3-pointer and a Bre Bellamy layup before a 7-0 Yale run over the next four minutes saw the Bulldogs take a 10-5 advantage. Taulelei ended the run with her first field goal of the evening and started the night 3-of-3 from the field and ended the half with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. The Minutewomen followed the Bulldogs' run by holding the home team scoreless for just over four minutes prior to a Yale field goal that gave them a 12-11 at the quarter break.
Yale used a 9-0 scoring run midway through the second quarter to push its lead to double figures at 25-15 before Stefanie Kulesza's first field goal of the night ended the run. The Bulldogs outscored the Minutewomen 22-12 in the second to lead 34-23 at halftime.
The Minutewomen shot a blistering 75-percent from the field in the third quarter, shooting 9-of-12 to outscore the Bulldogs 23-14 in the frame. UMass pulled within five on a Lilly Ferguson and-one at 45-40 with 2:58 left in the third and got within two points heading into the fourth at 48-46.
UMass carried over a stretch of nine for its last 10 from the field and tied things up at 48-48 on a Taulelei layup off a Kulesza assist early in the fourth. Yale followed with five unanswered points and used a 5-0 run over two minutes and change late in the fourth to grab a 62-55 lead on a Kiley Capstraw 3-pointer, her fifth of the game. The Bulldogs outscored the Minutewomen nine to two to go ahead 66-57 with just under a minute to go on their way to a 70-62 victory.
The Minutewomen conclude their six-game road trip on Wednesday, Dec. 6 with a 7 p.m. tip-off at Boston College and return home to the Mullins Center on Saturday, Dec. 10 to take on UMass Lowell at 12 p.m.
