Hockey's Musa And Ufko, Women's Swimming & Diving's Pierce Named UMass Student-Athletes Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. – Hockey freshman forward Jack Musa, junior defenseman Ryan Ufko and women's swimming graduate student Summer Pierce have been named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday. The trio will be recognized at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday, October 18, in the Berkshire Room at the Berkshire Dining Commons. Featured speakers will be men's soccer head coach Fran O'Leary and men's and women's swimming and diving head coach Sean Clark.
Musa led UMass in points on the week with five helpers against No. 6 Michigan, including three of the six goals the Minutemen scored in the third period in Saturday's 6-3 come-from-behind victory. He also assisted both goals in Friday's loss and currently leads UMass in scoring with six points through three games. He leads the nation in freshman scoring with six points, tied for sixth overall, and is tied for fifth overall in assists.
Ufko factored in the first three goals of UMass' six-goal third period on Saturday, scoring the first goal on the power play and then assisting the game-tying and go-ahead tallies. The Smithtown, New York native was +4 in the contest, +3 on the weekend.
Pierce and the Minutewomen earned second at the NJIT Invitational with 1,045 points. The Oswego, New York native garnered three top-three finishes, including claiming first in two individual events. She took first in the 200 individual medley (2:07.86) and in the 200 butterfly (2:05.81), while recording a time of 56.76 in the 100 butterfly to race into second place. Pierce helped the 200 medley relay team to a first place finish with a time of 1:45.75, before aiding the 400 medley relay team to first with a combined time of 3:52.21. She also anchored the 200 freestyle relay team, as the team posted a time of 1:38.42 to earn the silver.
