#15 Massachusetts Hockey Bested By Boston College At Frozen Fenway, 4-2

January 07, 2023 | Hockey

Cameron and Ufko both provided power-play goals for the Minutemen in the setback.

BOSTON – No. 15 University of Massachusetts hockey pulled within one early in the third period, but Boston College withstood the threat of two more UMass power plays in the frame and added an empty net goal to edge the Minutemen, 4-2 on Saturday at Fenway Park. Following the non-conference matchup between the Hockey East foes, UMass sits at 9-8-3 overall, while the Eagles move to 8-6-4.

"It was a great experience tonight. The weather turned out to be perfect, I didn't have to wear a toque out there. Tough way to start the game, first shot goes in. I'd like to have that one back, I'm sure Pav would too. I liked our response. I thought our power play was really good tonight, two goals and created a lot of opportunities. We lost the game, but I thought we played fairly well. It was a good hockey game and it was good to have (Ryan) Ufko and (Kenny) Connors back."

Boston College opened the scoring at the 2:25 mark of the first period with Cutter Gauthier firing a shot past Luke Pavicich on the rush from Cade Alami.

UMass came up with the equalizer 9:28 into the stanza with Michael Cameron finding himself alone in the slot and lifting a pass from Cole O'Hara and Ryan Lautenbach past Mitch Benson on the power play.

The Eagles pulled back in front, though, before the intermission with a power-play goal of their own. Cam Burke tipped home a feed from Lukas Gustaffson and Andre Gasseau in the slot at 12:41.

Burke then gave BC a two-goal cushion with his second of the night at 12:55 in the second, the lone tally of the frame.

Fresh off returning from the World Junior Championship, sophomore Ryan Ufko added UMass' second with the man advantage of the contest, 3:15 into the third. Kenny Connors sent the puck to sophomore Scott Morrow along the half-wall, who fed Ufko in the high slot for the strike.

The Eagles ended the threat of the of a UMass rally with an empty net power-play goal by Eamon Powell at 19:52 from Gauthier and Aidan Hreshuk.

Boston College out-shot the Minutemen, 37-25 on the night. Massachusetts was 2-for-6 on the power play, while BC was 2-for-3.

Pavicich finished the contest with 33 saves and Mitch Benson had 23 stops for the Eagles.

UMass will be back in action on Wednesday, January 11, when the squad will return to Boston to play at Boston University at 7 p.m.
