Massachusetts Women’s Basketball Earns Sixth Straight With 83-61 Victory Over Duquesne

Four Minutewomen reach double figures on the day.
PITTSBURGH – University of Massachusetts women's basketball garnered its sixth consecutive victory after defeating Duquesne University, 83-61, at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. Four Minutewomen recorded double figures in the win, led by senior Sydney Taylor with 20 points.
UMass improves to 17-4 overall and 7-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Duquesne falls to 14-8 overall and 4-5 in the league.
Along with Taylor, Makennah White (14), Sam Breen (12) and Angelique Ngalakulondi (10) all tallied double figures. Taylor and White came down with a game-high nine rebounds apiece, while Destiney Philoxy led the team in assists with six. Mayo also had a team best two swipes on the afternoon.
Massachusetts shot 46.5 percent (33-for-71) from the field, including 46.2 percent (12-for-26) from beyond the arc, while also shooting 62.5 percent(5-for-8) from the free throw line. The Minutewomen outrebounded the Dukes, 46-33. UMass scored the most points in a quarter this season with 33 in the first, and also scored the most points in a half this season with 49 total.
UMass got off to a strong start, beginning a 20-8 run, which elapsed six minutes and 29 seconds in the first quarter. The run for the Minutewomen saw four consecutive three-pointers, including two from Taylor, and one each from Breen and Mayo. Duquesne made a layup to cut its deficit in half, but Massachusetts went on 13-2, closing out the first quarter with a 33-12 lead.
The Minutewomen continued their run into the second quarter, pushing it to a 17-2 run, and extending their lead to 37-2. The two teams traded 10 points apiece with 2:53 left in the second. Philoxy made a layup to pull UMass ahead, 49-22, before the Dukes capped the first half with triple, entering halftime with a score of 49-25, in favor of Massachusetts.
In the third quarter, Massachusetts and Duquesne tallied six points each, before the Dukes continued ahead on a 12-9 run, but the Minutewomen held on to a 58-37 lead at the 4:22 mark. A 12-3 run, capped off by a Taylor three-pointer with one second remaining on the clock, aided UMass to a 30-point lead at 70-40.
Duquesne started the final frame with an 11-2 run, but the Minutewomen put up 11 more points to the Dukes 10 to maintain the lead and win 83-61.
Massachusetts takes on Richmond in the annual Play 4 Kay/Pink Game at the Mullins Center on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. on NESN+/ESPN+.
