Breen’s Double-Double Leads Women’s Basketball To 83-57 Victory Over VCU

Sam Breen collected 29 points and 11 rebounds for her 12th double-double this season.
AMHERST, Mass. – Graduate student Sam Breen recorded a game-high 29 points and 11 rebounds en route to her 12th double-double of the year, and 52nd of her career, to aid the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team to an 83-57 triumph over Virginia Commonwealth University on Thursday afternoon at the Mullins Center, presented by All States Materials Group.
UMass improves to 16-4 overall and 6-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while VCU drops to 5-14 overall and 2-5 in the league.
In addition to Breen leading the way in points and rebounds, she added eight assists, falling two shy of a triple-double, and a team best four steals. Sydney Taylor and Ber'Nyah Mayo also reached double figures, putting up 21 and 13 points, respectively.
Massachusetts edged out VCU in boards, 36-35, while almost doubling the number of points in the paint over the Rams (48-26). The Minutewomen shot 47.9 percent from the field (34-for-71), including 50.0 percent from beyond the arc (9-of-18).
VCU hit a pair of free throws to take an early 2-0 lead, before Taylor knocked down her first three-pointer of the day to give UMass a 3-2 lead. The two teams traded six points apiece, as Breen made a basket at the 4:33 mark, giving the Minutewomen the lead at 9-8. Breen's bucket began a 15-0 run that lasted the remainder of the first quarter, pushing Massachusetts ahead, 22-8.
The Minutewomen continued their run well into the second quarter, extending it to a 29-4 run, which elapsed 12 minutes and 12 seconds, as UMass led 36-12 with 2:39 remaining in the first half. In the final minutes of the second, the Rams started an 11-0 run, but the Minutewomen held on to the lead at 36-23. With only 0:00.9 seconds left in the quarter, Mayo sank a triple, pulling Massachusetts ahead, 39-23 heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, Massachusetts and VCU tallied seven points each, with the Minutewomen holding a 16-point lead at 46-30 at the 7:17 mark. UMass went on a small 9-5 run, lasting three minutes and one second, garnering a 20-point lead at 55-35. VCU edged out Massachusetts, scoring eight more points to UMass' six, but the Minutewomen kept a 61-43 lead.
Massachusetts maintained a steady lead in the final frame, going on a 17-5 run, capped by a three from Breen with 4:17 left in the contest. VCU began a small 8-0 run, but the Minutewomen still lead by 22 points at 78-56. A 5-1 run for UMass, which saw a Kristin Williams' three-pointer, sealed the deal for Massachusetts, finishing with an 83-57 victory.
