Massachusetts Hockey Drops 3-1 Decision At #13/16 UConn

January 21, 2023 | Hockey

The Minutemen will return to action at #19/20 UMass Lowell on Friday, January 27 at 7:15 p.m.

STORRS, Conn. – University of Massachusetts hockey opened the scoring, but three unanswered goals by No. 13/16 UConn resulted in a 3-1 setback for the Minutemen at Toscano Family Ice Forum on Saturday. The loss leaves UMass at 9-12-3 overall, 3-10-1 in Hockey East, while the Huskies improve to 15-7-3 and 10-6-2 in league play.

"UConn played really well tonight," said Massachusetts head coach Greg Carvel. "After we got the quick goal, over the next 10 minutes they really took the game over. I thought the second half of the first period we stabilized. We couldn't get much going. We're really shorthanded with three forwards that need to be in the lineup. Our defense struggled to move pucks up the ice and we didn't have a lot of offensive zone time, but (Luke) Pavicich was outstanding. He kept it to a close game."

UMass wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as sophomore Ryan Lautenbach caused a turnover in the neutral zone off the opening faceoff and carried the puck into the UConn end to fire a shot into the far corner of the net 12 seconds in.

The Huskies tied the score at 1-1 at the 15:26 mark of the second period when Nick Capone drove to the slot after collecting the puck from Ryan Tverberg and launched a wrister past UMass netminder Luke Pavicich.

UConn ultimately pulled in front at the 2:46 mark in the third period. Matthew Wood kept the puck in the Massachusetts end and sent it ahead Hudson Schandor who set up Justin Pearson with a pass across the slot for the finish into an open net.

Tverberg capped the scoring for the Huskies at 10:34 after Chase Bradley found him alone in the slot. Jake Flynn collected the secondary on the play.

UConn finished the contest with a 42-17 shot advantage. The Minutemen were 5-for-5 on the penalty kill and 0-for-2 on the power play on the afternoon.

Pavicich totaled 39 saves for UMass and Logan Terness stopped 16 shots in net for the Huskies.

The Minutemen will be back in action on Friday, January 27, when the team will travel to Lowell, Massachusetts, to face UMass Lowell in a 7:15 p.m. matchup.
