No. 25 Minutewomen Win Kennedy Cup in Shootout versus UMass Lowell, 3-2

Sophomore Dempsey Campbell scored the winning goal in the shootout to lift the Minutewomen over the Riverhawks.

AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 25 Massachusetts Field Hockey team was victorious on Friday afternoon in competition against the University of Massachusetts Lowell Riverhawks. This win also berthed Massachusetts as the winners of the Kennedy Cup, the annual award given to the winner of the rivalry. The win lifts the Minutewomen to a 2-1 record, and results in a 1-2 record for the Riverhawks.

After a scoreless first quarter, Emilie Kiej scored her first goal of the season on a penalty corner at 13:04 in the second quarter, with assists registered by Claire Danahy and Jess Beech. The Riverhawks answered quickly, scoring two goals in less than three minutes after halftime. Both goals were scored on penalty corners. Caitlin Little snuck a shot past freshman goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen (4 saves) with Mirthe Gans and Meike Vischer assisting just 38 seconds into the third quarter. Just 2:55 later, Lily Watson tallied a goal, assisted by Berbel Rozema, at 3:33 in the third quarter, giving UMass Lowell their first lead of the game. Freshman Gabrielle Benkenstein tied the match in the fourth quarter, getting a shot past goalkeeper Eleonore Boekhorst (7 saves). This goal was assisted by Steph Gottwals and Jess Beech. The match could not be decided in overtime. Sophomore Dempsey Campbell's shootout goal secured the win for the Minutewomen. 

The Minutewomen led in shots, with 19 total shots, 9 being on goal. Meanwhile, the Riverhawks registered 10 shots, 6 of which were on goal. The Riverhawks led in penalty corners, 7-6.

Massachusetts Field Hockey returns to action this Sunday as they take on the University of New Hampshire Wildcats at 12 p.m. at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
