No. 25 Minutewomen Top New Hampshire in Overtime, 4-3

Freshman Gabrielle Benkenstein scored the game-winning goal in overtime to earn the victory for Massachusetts.

AMHERST, Mass. - No. 25 Massachusetts Field Hockey earned the victory against non-conference opponent University of New Hampshire Wildcats on Sunday afternoon. This win moves Massachusetts to 3-1, while New Hampshire falls to 3-1.
 

The Wildcats and Minutewomen's scoring did not occur until the second half of the match. Sophomore Dempsey Campbell fired a shot past New Hampshire's Jemma Woods (13 saves) to get the Minutewomen on the board first at 10:41 in the third quarter. Less than two minutes later, freshman Mali Herberhold scored an unassisted tally to give Massachusetts a 2-0 lead with just 2:27 left in the third quarter.

UNH's first goal came off of a penalty shot, taken by Tasmin Cookman just 3:22 into the fourth quarter. From there, Jaiden Wittel snuck a shot past freshman Myrte van Herwijnen (2 saves) on a penalty corner to even the score at 7:11 in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats took their first lead just shy of two minutes later, when Nicole Poulakis capitalized on a scoring opportunity at 8:46 in the fourth quarter. Just one minute later, Massachusetts' Claire Danahy responded, tying the game with an assist credited to freshman Gabrielle Benkenstein at 9:46 in the fourth quarter.

Gabrielle Benkenstein scored the game-winning goal in overtime just 3:45 into the quarter off a penalty corner.

Massachusetts had the advantage in shots (21-10) and penalty corners (9-2) on the day.
 

The Minutewomen return to action next Friday and Saturday, September 10 and 11, at the University of Iowa as they take on the Providence Friars (2 p.m.) and the University of Iowa Hawkeyes (2 p.m.).
