No. 25 Massachusetts Falls to No. 1 Northwestern, 4-1

Jess Beech scored the lone goal in the setback for the Minutewomen.
AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 25 Massachusetts Minutewomen (1-1) lost their first match of the season against the No. 1 Northwestern Wildcats (2-0) by a score of 4-1 at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Northwestern's Bente Baekers scored her first goal of the day just 4:27 into gameplay. Massachusetts' Jess Beech responded on a penalty corner for the Minutewomen's lone goal of the game at 13:44 in the first quarter, assisted by Mali Herberhold.
The Wildcats scored the remaining three goals on the game. At 6:32, Lane Herbert got a shot past freshman goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen (16 saves). Baekers scored another at 14:33, while teammate Peyton Halsey notched her first goal of the game to solidify the Wildcat win.
Northwestern led in shots (32-7) as well as in corners (16-4). Northwestern goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz recorded 2 saves on the day.
The Minutewomen return to action this Friday, September 2 as they host the UMass Lowell Riverhawks at 3 p.m. at Gladchuk Field.
