Baseball Drops Rubber Match To George Mason, 3-2

Shapiro records first home run of the season in loss.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped a 3-2 contest to George Mason University in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Graduate student Collin Shapiro registered his first home run of the season in the loss.
The Minutemen move to 19-18-1 overall and 7-8 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while the Patriots improve to 16-26 overall and 8-7 in the league.
Shapiro, Kevin Skagerlind and Mike Gervasi all had two hits to lead the team, while Drew DeMartino and Will MacLean tallied on hit apiece, including a triple from MacLean. Shapiro and DeMartino scored the Minutemen's two runs. Shapiro and Gervasi added an RBI each on the day.
Shapiro led off for the Minutemen with a first-pitch solo home run over the right field fence to give UMass an early 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, DeMartino advanced to second on a balk, before Gervasi singled to left field, sending DeMartino across the plate, extending Massachusetts' lead.
George Mason tallied a run in the eighth frame, cutting the deficit in half. The Patriots brought the game to a 2-2 draw, and secured the go-ahead run off an RBI single, pushing them to a 3-2 lead. The Minutemen were unable to rally in the final inning, as George Mason picked up the series win.
Tyler Dalton (1-3) took the loss for the Minutemen, going 2.1 innings, and allowing three runs on two hits, one walk and striking out two. Christian Mracna (1-4) grabbed the win on the mound for George Mason, pitching 2.2 innings with no runs, no hits, walking two and dealing three strikeouts. Danny Hosley picked up his first save of the season, giving up three hits, but no runs, and striking out three.
Massachusetts prepares for a road game on Tuesday, May 3, at Fairfield, Connecticut, to face Fairfield at 3:30 p.m. The contest will be streamed on Stags Sports Network.
