Gervasi records two-run home run in the third for the Minutemen.
Gervasi was the lone Minuteman with RBIs, tallying two. Both Gervasi and Dylan Judd had two hits each, including Gervasi's long ball, while Gervasi and Kevin Skagerlind came across the plate for Massachusetts. Nolan Tichy, Steve Luttazi and Carter Hanson all totaled one hit.
Dayton scored three runs in the first inning and two more in the second to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. In the third, UMass came back within three when Skagerlind and Gervasi came across the dish off Gervasi's homer to left field.
The Flyers added to their lead, scoring four more in the fourth to make it a 9-2 contest, before totaling four more altogether, with one run in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Kevin Dow (6-2) took the loss for UMass, giving up nine runs on 12 hits, walking three and striking out two in 3.2 innings. Max LeBlanc closed out the final three innings for Massachusetts, allowing three runs on two hits, walking three and matched a season-high six strikeouts. Ryan Steinhauer (3-3) earned the win for Dayton after pitching six complete innings, and only allowing two runs on five hits, walked one and had six strikeouts.
Massachusetts and Dayton prepare for game two of the series on Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m., at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium.
