Baseball Takes Series From Saint Joseph’s After Doubleheader Split On Saturday

Minutemen earned a 13-12 comeback win in game two to takes the series from the Hawks.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball secured its third straight weekend series triumph after defeating Saint Joseph's University, 13-12, in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, before picked up a 16-13 victory in the final game of the series at Earl Lorden Field.
 
The Minutemen now holds a 10-9-1 overall record, including 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while the Hawks moved to 13-12 overall and 1-2 in league play.
 
UMass is back in action on Tuesday, April 5, when the team travels to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to take on Harvard for the Opening Round of the Beanpot Tournament at 3 p.m.
 
Game 1
Massachusetts 13, Saint Joseph's 12 (9 innings)
 
Dylan Judd led UMass with three hits, as four Minutemen followed with two apiece. Drew DeMartino totaled a team-high three runs, while Cole Hebble, Mike Gervasi, Will MacLean and Judd all had two each. Judd and MacLean tallied three RBIs, with MacLean recording a three-run home run. Judd and Hebble added doubles to their stat sheet.  
 
Saint Joseph's struck first, putting up three runs on the board in the top of the first. UMass cut into the deficit in the bottom of the first, when Kevin Skagerlind touched home plate. The Hawks made a 9-1 game after scoring six more runs in the top of the second. Massachusetts continued to climb back when Hebble doubled to left, bringing around Judd, before a throwing error on SJU allowed Jacob Sloss and Hebble to also come home, making it 9-4.
 
The Hawks secured one more run in both the third and fourth inning to lead 11-4. Judd singled down the right field line, sending DeMartino to home in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-5.
 
In the sixth frame, DeMartino singled through the left side as Skagerlind came in to score, before MacLean earned his second long ball of the season, to bring in two other Minutemen, bringing the UMass back within two runs.
 
After a scoreless seventh inning, Massachusetts brought the game to an 11-11 draw in the bottom of the eighth off a Judd double to left field that allowed both Gervasi and DeMartino to score. The Minutemen grabbed their first lead of the contest at 13-11, after a two-out, two-run single from Nolan Tichy. Saint Joseph's registered a solo home run in the top of the ninth, but the Minutemen shut down the offense for the comeback victory.
 
Max LeBlanc (1-1) notched the win for the Minutemen, pitching two complete innings, allowing one hit, walking two and having struck out two. Jack Pawloski picked up his second save of the year, giving up one run on two hits and striking out three in one inning of work. Ryan Devine (1-2) took the loss for SJU after getting two strike outs, allowing four runs, two hits and walking one in 2.2 innings.
 
Game 2

Hebble went 5-for-6 in game two, scoring three runs and adding one RBI. Gervasi earned a team best four RBIs and tallied two hits. Judd contributed two doubles, followed by Hebble and MacLean with one each. MacLean recorded three hits, while Judd and Gervasi totaled two.
 
Saint Joseph's opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, bringing in one, before a sacrifice fly from Gervasi allowed Hebble to score in the bottom of the frame to tie it up at 1-1.
 
The Hawks regained the lead putting up two more runs in the top of the second, but the Minutemen quickly took back the lead in the bottom half. MacLean led off in the frame with a double, before Judd doubled to left field to send MacLean home to make it a 3-2 contest. A single up the middle from Hebble later in the inning brought Sloss around to score to aid UMass to a 4-3 lead. Massachusetts extended its lead with a two-run single to right field from Gervasi, allowing Hebble and Skagerlind to touch home plate.
 
SJU took back the lead with a five-run fourth inning, before adding two more in the fifth, bringing the game to a 10-6 score.
 
Three more runs in the top of the seventh pushed the Hawks to a 13-6 lead, but a seven-run bottom half for UMass tied the game up at 13 apiece. Hebble came in to score off a Gervasi single, before MacLean's two RBI single sent Skagerlind and Gervasi home. MacLean made it 13-11 after scoring off a ground out RBI from Sloss. Steve Luttazi reached first on an error from a dropped third strike, as Judd came home to score, closing the gap to 13-12. A sacrifice fly from Skagerlind allowed Luttazi to record the tying run before heading into the eighth frame.
 
A three-run homer from the Hawks pulled them back to a 16-13 lead in the top of the eighth and the Minutemen were unable to get the bats going throughout the remainder of the game, as the final score of 16-13 went in SJU's favor.
 
Zach Clevenger (1-1) took the loss, going 1.1 innings, allowing three runs, one hit, and two walks. For Saint Joseph's Matt McShane (3-0) earned the win, pitching three complete innings, allowing one run on three hits and tallying five strikeouts.
