UMass Men’s Track & Field Takes Top Spot At Home Meet

The Minutemen led a six-team field at the UMass Track & Field Complex on Saturday.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's track and field took the top spot in six events to help propel the squad to the top of the team standings at the UMass Track & Field Complex on Saturday. The Minutemen led the six-team field with a score of 170, followed by WPI (128), Boston University (82), Vermont (76), Harvard (44) and Hartford (34).
Michael Rodia led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 meter dash, running 11.00 seconds. Teammates Andrew Chabon and Ethan Clark followed in second and third with times of 11.10 and 11.12, respectively.
Matthew George won the 3,000 meter steeplechase, clocking in at 9 minutes, 23.03 seconds, while Zachary Conant was the runner-up at 9 minutes, 23.09 seconds.
Nasir Perry took first in 400 meter hurdles at 59.28 seconds and placed third in 110 meter hurdles in 15.03 seconds, while Denzel Agyeman landed fifth (15.50).
Four Minutemen finished in the scoring in 400 meter dash as Alexander Laurent came in second (50.06), Christopher Matthews was third (50.23), Javier Donegan seventh (51.34) and Mojuba Shonekan eighth (51.38).
The 5,000 meter run saw Will Kenney place third in 15 minutes, 4.19 seconds and Xavier Metivier take fifth in 15 minutes, 16.71 seconds. Rounding out UMass' individual scorers on the track, Felipe Gonzalez finished second in 200 meter dash (22.09) and Nicholas Calitri was fourth in 800 meter run (1:56.19).
Coston O'Brien earned three top-three finishes on the day as he won hammer with a toss of 167 feet, 9 inches, was third in shot put (50' 0.75") and was part of a 1-2-3 sweep in discus as he landed third with a toss of 142 feet, 10 inches. Tevin Early took first in discus and Joseph Duggan was second, with marks of 151 feet and 144 feet, six inches, respectively. Duggan (6th, 45'7.75") and Early (8th, 43'8") both scored in shot put, as well. Will Dion was second in hammer throw at 162 feet.
Flynn Mitchell placed second in javelin with a toss of 186 feet, 9 inches and Allan Bellevue earned sixth in long jump (20'8").
UMass' 4x100 meter relay team of Gonzalez, Rodia, Patrick Walsh and Clark combined for a winning time of 42.35 seconds and the 4x400 meter relay team of Matthews, Bernd Martens, Daniel Dubsky and Perry was second, clocking in at 3 minutes, 22.75 seconds.
The Minutemen also had two runners in action at the UConn Northeast Challenge as Lucas Honohan and Colin Stoddard raced in the 400 meter dash. Honohan finished ninth (48.36) and Stoddard 15th (48.79).
Massachusetts will next travel to the Virginia Challenge (April 22-23) and the Holy Cross Invitational (April 23).
