Early Second Half Run Lifts Fordham Over UMass

BRONX, N.Y. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team fell to Fordham 85-73 on Monday evening in Rose Hill Gym. The Minutemen (12-16 Overall, 5-11 Atlantic 10) return home to the Mullins Center for Senior Day on Wednesday at 7 p.m. with a rematch against the Rams.

The Minutemen jumped out to an 18-13 lead heading into the under-12 media timeout before five early points each from Michael Steadman and T.J. Weeks. Steadman finished tied for the team-high in points with 13.

UMass held Fordham to a 3-of-15 start from the field before the Rams finished the half at 41-percent on 16-of-39 from the field.

Fordham answered UMass' five-point with a 6-0 run and led 40-36 following a halfcourt heave that beat the buzzer. The Rams opened the second half 5-of-5 from 3-point range and 9-of-13 from the field as they built a lead as big as 15 points.

Noah Fernandes returned from foul trouble late in the first half and got his scoring going with a late 3-pointer. Fernandes scored nine of the next 11 UMass points stretching into the second half and finished his night with tied for the team-high with 13.

UMass chipped away and strung together a 12-4 scoring run to get with seven at 70-63 with 6:02 left before the Rams made four of their next five shots to stretch the lead back to 14 with 2:28 remaining. Fordham shot 15-for-24 in the second half for just over 62-percent and were led by Chuba Ohams' 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Rich Kelly added 12 points for the Minutemen on 5-of-6 from the field while Weeks pitched in nine points to go along with six rebounds. Trent Buttrick led the Minutemen on the glass with seven boards to help the Minutemen outrebound the Rams 37-36 on the night.
